Hi everyone. This is my dad Frank. 2 years ago, my dad was diagnosed with end stage liver disease. Since his diagnosis, we dealt with some scary symptoms such as hepatic encephalopathy, which is temporary loss of brain function, as well as edema in his legs, and excess abdominal fluid which caused some breathing issues. We were referred to UCSF in May 2024 to have a normal assessment in hopes to get listed for transplant. We thought we had maybe 6 months or so of wait time as we didn't think he was as sick as he was. By the end of his assessment, the hepatologist came in and told us UCSF was going to admit him that day because his liver was declining quickly. Luckily, he was listed for transplant the next day. The day after that, we were blessed with a donor. Everything happened so fast and my dad was transplanted within a little over 48 hours. I had never been so scared. I was watching my dad deteriorate before my eyes. After being transplanted, we were told my dad had maybe 24 hours left in his life had he not got the organ he received. It was a miracle.
Although, we feel so grateful for this gift of life, the realization that we had no time to prepare for is starting to sink in. My dad will not be able to work for at least 3 months. I have also taken at least 8 weeks off of work to care for my father. I work for myself, so no paid sick leave. However, our major concern is my dad, his medical bills, car payment, and daily needs.
Everyone that knows Frank, LOVES FRANK. He lives for his daughter and will go above and beyond for everyone in his life. Whether that's family, friends, bosses, coworkers, anyone. My dad is a giver, but now it's his turn to receive. Thank you for taking the time to read our story. We are overwhelmed with the amount of love and support we have been receiving during this time.
