Frankie on the Road to Recovery

We're hoping you can help with Frankie's $8,500 in vet bills - read her story below!

Grace & Frankie met on a sunny spring Saturday morning in Denver, CO. Grace had been looking and applying for a puppy to adopt for weeks, but the stars didn’t align until she met Frankie, an 8 week old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd with grey eyes and a spunky, adventurous personality.

The first week Frankie was home went without a hitch. It became evident early on that Frankie has a huge personality for a little pup. She loves belly rubs, nibbling on our hair, playing with her toys, being carried on walks in the neighborhood, and having the ‘zoomies’ around the house at least twice a day. Frankie, being the smart little lady she is, even learned to sit on command within a couple of days of being home!
The first sign something was wrong came one week after Grace got her. Frankie was making retching sounds and seemed uncomfortable, then threw up a big (and gross) worm. Grace immediately scheduled an appointment with the vet, and Frankie went in that day. The vet tested Frankie for several types of worms and parvovirus and sent Grace home with anti-parasite medication. The next day, Frankie was still very lethargic, not eating or drinking, and somehow seemed to be doing worse, so the vet told Grace to take her to an animal hospital.
At the animal hospital, they determined that Frankie had two types of worms, roundworm and hookworm, as well as parvovirus. The vet believes she already had the virus and worms prior to her coming home with Grace. Parvovirus is a disease of the stomach and small intestines and is extremely contagious, and potentially fatal, in puppies who have not yet been fully vaccinated. While having worms or parvovirus is somewhat common, it can be very hard for puppies as young as Frankie to recover, and having all three at once made it extremely difficult for Frankie’s immune system to fight back.
Frankie was admitted to the hospital, where she stayed in the critical care unit for 6 days and 5 nights. She would not have made it without the exceptional care she received there. Despite many ups and downs, Grace was thankfully able to take Frankie home this past Friday (May 1). We have quickly had to adjust to caring for and administering Frankie's multiple daily medicines and she's been very accepting of our amateur vet skills. Frankie has been getting better every day, and we are starting to see glimmers of her rambunctious personality shine through! However, unfortunately, Frankie has had another setback and developed an infection at one of the IV sites in her leg. This will require more vet visits and stitches.

Frankie’s owner and our roommate, Grace, is a 1st-grade teacher in Denver, CO. She is one of the kindest and most thoughtful people we know - and not to mention the best dog mama! Having Frankie in our house has brought us all much happiness and laughter, and are very relieved that Frankie is on the path to recovery. We want to do whatever we can to help Grace and Frankie, and humbly ask for your support as well.
Any money raised will go toward paying the extensive medical expenses acquired from Frankie’s stay in the hospital, and the care needed for her leg infection. The total cost as of now is $8,000. Grace has paid $3,000, and her family and friends have donated $4,000 so far. This is still a huge financial burden for her, and we want to help her as much as we can. We know this is a tough time for many people, and we are so very grateful for anything you are able to donate - if it is $1, $5, $10 or more. Thank you!
