Anyone who knows Frank, knows him as honest, loyal, funny and most of all a devoted family man. Frank had been experiencing violent coughing spells and having a very hard time breathing. Because he doesn’t have health insurance, he waited as long as he could before going to the emergency room for what he thought would be a quick fix. That trip took him to CKMC (Crozer) for 2 weeks. There it was confirmed that he had a mass on his lung and even larger mass encompassed the left side of his heart. Frank’s prognosis was grim. At this point the doctors decided that if Frank had a chance, it would be at Penn . Within 36 hours of his arrival there, he had major surgery. The process included removing his left lung, then repairing and reconstructing the left side of his heart once the tumor was removed. His team of doctors described the surgery as a ‘100 yard Hail Mary’. He pulled through and has been stable and recovering ahead of the medical expectations. We are not sure what his recovery period will entail, but at this point we know it will be extensive, time consuming and costly. Before his surgery Frank was given a 50/50 chance for survival. He chose life, telling his doctor ‘I’m going home’.
