Francisco Nsabimana

Francisco Nsabimana was born in Rwanda in 2000. His family was not safe in their home country and fled. Francisco spent his childhood and adolescence in refugee camps in Malawi, Tanzania, and eSwatini. in Malawi. He found his passion in writing from a Writers Club when he was in Dzaleka Community Day Secondary School in Malawi. He won a scholarship to Waterford Kamhlaba United World College and hopes to continue his education at university in Canada.

Francisco's dream is to publish his poetry. He will be able to do so with TellWell, a Canadian company that offers self-publishing and print on demand. Francisco wants to donate all the proceeds of his sales to the refugee camps he grew up in.

Francisco’s poems mainly focus on abuse and his experience as a young refugee. The themes running through his poems are suffering, disruption of his education, and gratitude to all who have helped him on the way.

Francisco’s poetry is deeply pan-African and is inspired by realities on the continent, from the legacy of the Rwandan genocide, to the HIV epidemic, to pervasive damaging gender norms. His poetry is about his own experiences and those of the people he has met in refugee camps and schools.

Above all, Francisco’s poetry speaks of the bonds between people and the compassion and kindness we owe to another. Deeply rooted in the landscapes of sub-Saharan Africa, Francisco’s poetry is raw and brutal, while paradoxically brimming with hope.

Supporting Francisco's work means supporting a poet, student, refugee and philanthropist.
