Frances Porras Lingemann (pictured center front)
January 4, 2021, started out like any other day for Frances Porras Lingemann, Cohasset resident, Orland native, and Willows business owner and operator. She mailed some New Years greetings to friends that morning. She went to work and later went to exercise with a sister - but by late afternoon she had a horrific headache and she suddenly lost consciousness. Frances had suffered a devastating brain aneurysm resulting in a coma which lasted for several weeks.
Family and Community:
Frances has been a beloved part of the North Valley community for decades. Most kids in Willows and Orland have had a team jersey from Frances’ shop, All Seasons Screen Print. If you were on a school or recreational team, Frances probably printed your name and number on your team jersey. In Orland, if you played adult co-ed recreational softball, you have probably played a game with Frances and her family. If you live around Cohasset and have had a water well drilled in the last decade, chances are good that Frances’ husband, Bo Lingemann, drilled your well.
Frances' Intensive Care Recovery, Beating the Odds:
On January 4, 2021, Frances was transported by life flight to Mercy Hospital in Redding where she spent her initial weeks in intensive care. At first, her husband, Bo, was the only person allowed to visit her due to COVID precautions. Her large family - mother, 7 sisters and 1 brother - would talk and sing to her via video chat.
In the first weeks after the aneurysm, doctors gave Frances a 50% chance of survival at best, but her indomitable spirit, as well as the prayers and determination of her loving family have helped Frances beat those odds. When she first regained some consciousness 10 days after the aneurysm, she was not able to move anything but the fingers on one hand. A month and a half after the aneurysm, she was finally able to get off the ventilator. The day when she was able to fully breathe on her own, family and friends cheered her tenacity. The day Frances was able to whisper the first small joke to her husband, showed everyone her enormous capacity for love and humor under any circumstance. Slowly, but surely, Frances has made steady progress, regained the ability to move her body, but she still needs a wheel chair as she works to fully regain strength, balance, and coordination.
Where we are now:
Frances has now been moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation center where she continues to receive intensive therapy to relearn and strengthen both her body and mind. She continues to make remarkable progress for a woman who suffered such brain trauma and weeks of immobility. Her family wants her to have every opportunity to recover fully, but the months of continued intensive rehabilitation therapy will have a cost that is not covered by insurance. It is hard to say how long the therapy will take to get her to a place where she can fully manage daily activities again, as each person differs in the duration of their progress.
Continued Costs:
The out of pocket cost, not covered by insurance, is $1,099 a day at the rehabilitation facility. Frances’ stay at the facility will be anywhere from 1 - 6 months, depending on her individual progress. The insurance company will make a new determination monthly on whether they will continue to pay a portion of those daily fees. Each month, as long as insurance pays their portion, the family will owe $33,976 out of pocket for treatment. The best case scenario would be that Frances could recover well enough to leave the rehabilitation center in 4 months, with insurance agreeing to pay a full 100 days as allowable for rehabilitation services. This would leave the family with bills of $153,900 just for the rehabilitation services. There are still bills coming in from the hospital ICU care.
