On Sunday, 16 June, the Frackowiak family were enjoying a lovely day at Camber Sands where Marek got to do what he loved most - kite surfing.
The next day, on 17 June, Marek felt unwell and was admitted to Charing Cross Hospital. It was revealed that he suffered a minor stroke and was kept in the hospital overnight for observation and testing. He was discharged from the hospital the next day (18 June) in spite of feeling unwell.
Unfortunately, later that week, on Thursday, 20 June, Marek suffered a catastrophic stroke. The ICU staff at Charing Cross Hospital performed an emergency craniectomy in order to save his life, but the stroke was so severe that it caused massive brain trauma, damaging both sides of his brain, making recovery that much more difficult. Marek’s body is completely paralyzed on the right side, and he cannot speak, eat, walk – or do almost anything. He is currently in a rehabilitation unit at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square, London, showing no signs of a full recovery.
While family and friends remain hopeful, we are looking for ways to help this beautiful family as they continue to seek alternative sources of treatment for Marek and future home stability for themselves. We ask that you contribute to the Frackowiak Family Fund in order to help them get through this financially difficult time. While the prognosis for Marek’s recovery is unknown, what is certain is the requirement of medical assistance for years to come. Should you have any direct questions, please reach out to me at [email redacted]
