Lisa's Recovery Fund

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Alexis, and I am fundraising for Lisa Boch. Unfortunately, on October 22 she was hit by a car in a parking lot and is in critical condition at University of Maryland shock trauma. She is severely injured and at this time we aren’t sure how things are going to go.

Many of you know and have been in the company of Lisa at rescue events. We are asking that you keep Lisa and her family in your thoughts. Lisa is a big part of our rescue family, and it has shattered us. We are a mess and full of worry. If you are able to donate to her medical care, bills or care for her animals it would be greatly appreciated.

Update 10/23 - Lisa has been moved from shock trauma to ICU

Update 10/27 - Lisa is a little less than half way through the operation she needs. She has been sedated since Sunday. She has frames stabilizing both knees now. They did close some of the incisions in her legs this morning. I was told her broken ribs have prevented further operations until her lungs are safe from them.

Update 10/28 - This evening Lisa opened her eyes and looked at her sister Chris when asked to. She asked her yes no questions and sometimes she seemed to understand. She shook her head no that she was not in pain.

Update 10/29 - Her ventilator is set to low and is helping her breath rather than doing it for her. They removed one chest tube the other day. Her parents were there when the brought her out of a sleep and where able to communicate (she blinked yes/no). She again indicated she felt no pain and she is trying to move a bit.

Update 10/31 - Lisa is waking up more and indicated she felt pain. Her swelling seems to be worse and they have not scheduled her hip and femur surgery because of this. She was going for a CT scan again when we left to make sure she was ok.

Update 11/2 - They are planning to take the breathing tube out of her and they are going to do a tracheotomy on her tomorrow morning at 7 AM. No other noteable updates, she is still in ICU and critical but fighting.

Update 11/3 - Lisa was supposed to get a tracheotomy this morning and we figured that she would be out of the OR by now. Instead, she's still in the OR and getting a rod put in her femur. That is a good thing and that leaves her pelvis to be done. Later this day, she required CPR, she has been seen by the cardiologist and is back on medication to help.

Update 11/5 - Only one tube in her nose and trach working great (still on ventilator). Said they also need to do an MRI soon when she is up to it (not sure when that may be). If the results are good she can get the neck collar off (excellent). They braided her hair cute - told her she should keep it that way. She immediately opened her eyes when her friend Cathy talked to her. Nurses laughed as she did not for them. She looks really good now. She opened her lips for mouth cleaning and her mouth to get suctioned out (made her cough a bit but good and expected). Indicated no pain also. They took out her second chest tube and are planning to try to take her off the dialysis. If that is successful, they may go ahead and operate on her hip.

Update 11/6 - The good news is that Lisa is stable and has been taken off the dialysis machine. The bad news is they have detected another infection and until it is handled they can’t to the hip surgery.

11/7 - Lisa immediately opened her eyes when Cathy talked to her and she moved them towards her. She turned her head a bit, moved her leg and arm. Talked to her a bit and then she was definitely talking! Nothing coming out but that will come - and certainly did not stop her from continuing to "talk". She definitely smiled and showed teeth when I told her she had no gray hair as her hair is growing out - lol. Color is great and swelling way down too. Not scheduled for hip surgery yet and still critical in ICU. Her pulse rate and blood pressure are not jumping all over the place any more.

Update 11/9 - Lisa is much more awake and aware. She can’t speak so her parents took her phone to her. Unfortunately she couldn’t get her fingers to cooperate yet. That will come. She did manage to communicate using an alphabet chart. When we asked what we could get to help, we got to POP and wet stymied until the male nurse came up with Popsocket!  Then she made it clear that she wanted to punch the perp. She is angry. We explained the incident and that there absolutely was nothing that she could have done to avoid it. She is off the dialysis. They will wean her off the ventilator. We have no schedule for her next operation.

Update 11/10 - Lisa asked nurse to call Cathy this morning! She is doing much better. She is talking - but no sound. Hard to read lips but she is patient. Her phone is dead but her parents are on the way with a charger. Nurse was reading her phone updates. She needs to build strength in her hands to write on white board or use phone but that won't take long. When they are sure she doesn't need ventilator any longer she can move to step down unit and out of ICU. No time frame on that but great news.

Update 11/11 - Lisa has been running a fever for three days and they are testing to try to find out what it is. This has set back efforts to get her a trach speaking device. She also isn’t as awake and functioning as she did with Cathy recently. Also, the ortho doctors are pretty sure they shouldn’t operate on her hip because it is already healing wrong. She may need a hip replacement which would put her in a wheelchair and delay rehab effectiveness. Hopefully they will reassess Monday. It’s been three weeks. Because most of her friends are well acquainted with injuries and recovery, I don’t have to say more. Please keep those cards and prayers coming.

Update 11/12 - Lisa was awake and "talkative" for the couple hours Cathy was there. Can almost use her phone on her own so much better use of arms and finger on left hand (but she is right handed). She has her glasses and can now see people clearly. No more fever, lungs are clear, breathing on her own during the day. She wants to get up and walk. She is determined to do things herself which is great. Although she isn't able to yet. Looked great.

Update 11/14 - They moved her to her recliner chair, PT team came in to evaluate and work with her (she did well). Then nurse team came in and changed her trach to a smaller one. This will allow them to start speech therapy with it and then eating. She can hold her sponge on a stick (water on it) and put it in her mouth as well. She has been begging for water the last 5 days so she is happy for that. If all continues well she can move out of ICU and to the Step Down floor. She is really looking forward to that. Looks like she can use phone minimally to swipe but very close to using that to communicate as well.

Update 11/14 - Things are still going slowly step by a little step for Lisa. She still can't manipulate a pen. The trace valve is also a small step thing. In addition to her hip problem her right knee will need to be rebuilt. They are still looking to delay that because of her total physical condition. We expect her to be moved to step down shortly. She is currently receiving physical therapy for her upper body strength. She tires out easily because her body is still trying to heal itself.

Update 11/15 - Lisa has orders to be moved to Step Down Unit. They are waiting for an available bed there.

Update 11/16 - Lisa is doing well, still mouthing words because the trace valve is not working well. But she has still not moved to stepdown because a bed is not available. It certainly seems that she will not be having the hip or knee operations in the near future. Still waiting on a bed in step down level (there are only 12). Much better range of motion in her arms, she is getting ice cubes once an hour, she got to eat a little applesauce too. She said it was delicious and she is feeling much better. She is easier to understand lip reading as well (esp when she cusses lol). She leaned forward for Cathy to scratch her back. She is sitting up in a much smaller chair now to. They will move her back to a bed soon.

Update 11/18 - She can talk understandably even with out the device! And there is no mistake that she has her wits about her. Chris came in as I was leaving and she is happy. She had PT today and yesterday. It tired her out but she can move her arms and hands much better each day. They have not moved her to stepdown because of a lack of rooms. Chris has gently begun the discussion of what comes after.
