In 2024, our mother, Kristi, had a turbulent year. It started as some itchiness on her foot. It quickly progressed to a painful injury that significantly impacted her ability to stand and walk — to put weight on the affected foot at all. She managed to tough it out long enough to attend her first son's wedding in May (from which this cover photo was taken). However, her condition worsened. It wasn't long before standing became painful on its own. She didn't realize it at the time, but she had turned yellow — jaundice. The underlying cause? Liver failure. Mom was in and out of the ER through most of 2024. In September, she began an extended stay at a hospital that culminated in a liver transplant in early October. Unfortunately, her story doesn't end there.
A rocky recovery process has revealed to her family that Mom was also suffering from kidney failure. She needed a kidney transplant. From November to December, she was preparing for it while going through her post-op recovery from the liver transplant. Frustratingly, at the turn of the new year, Mom suffered a major stroke.
She lost control of her right side. She has been going through physical therapy to regain control and strength in the affected parts of her body. Sadly, her memory has also taken a turn for the worse following the stroke.
But she's still here. She's a tough lady!
We (her immediate family) have a plan to get her into an assisted living situation — which is not covered by insurance. That is the purpose of this GoFundMe: to help us secure the funds to afford the care our Mom needs and deserves.
If you've read this far, thank you so much for hearing Mom's story. We wish you good health and a long life.
Here are some of our favorite pictures of our beloved mother!
