Melissa Azbell is an active 32-year-old mother of 3 who also works full time as a property manager and is a loving girlfriend. In the early morning of Dec 5th Melissa's world was turned upside-down when she woke up unable to walk and had intense pain in her legs and back. She was transported to the emergency room by Ambulance and was later diagnosed with Transvers Myelitis (a rare neurological disorder caused by inflammation of the spinal cord https://rarediseases.info.nih.gov/diseases/7796/transverse-myelitis ). Melissa is currently in the critical care unit at Venice Regional receiving care for her illness. She is still in a lot of pain and cannot move her legs. Melissa is unable to work at this time and we do not know when or if she will be able to return to work. She has a very long road ahead of her and our goal is to have her make a full recovery which could take several years. John Hopkins Hospital in Maryland has a Transverse Myelitis center dedicated to the treatment and management of this rare disease. We are working hard to get her transferred to this facility so she can get the best care and have the best chance for recovery. The cost associated with her care and rehab is unknown at this time. This is such a rare disorder, and it will involve months if not years of treatments and care. The expense of this treatment plus the care involved with raising her 3 children is going to be costly.
