Help Us Rebuild Masala Wok

Hi, my name is Angelica Dhall and I am fundraising for my father, Mike Dhall. He runs a small restaurant called Masala Wok in the heart of Hicksville, NY. My father first opened Masala Wok in August of 2001.

He immigrated from India to the U.S. in the 1980s. Since then, he has worked tirelessly, virtually 7 days a week, every week to provide for me and my brother and sister. Although, we begged him to retire and take family vacations, he constantly refused so he could keep the restaurant open and serve the community with no disruption. Most of the locals would say that my father is a kind and generous man who always looked out for his customers and hardly turned down a discount request. My father always had a strong work ethic and cared for his restaurant and the community immensely.

On the morning of November 19, 2022, the restaurant engulfed in flames with no one inside. My father opens the door to open up the restaurant only to be greeted with a smoke and ashes. A call to the fire department was immediately made but it was too late to prevent the business from being destroyed.

It breaks my heart seeing my father stood out in the freezing cold for hours, watching as the firefighters put out the blaze.

Masala Wok was not just a workplace for my father, it was his life’s work. He poured all of his energy, creativity, sweat and tears into the restaurant, the restaurant was like a home to him. It was also a place where he made many memories, such as celebrating milestones with his family and built many close relationships with the residents of Hicksville and frequent customers. Now all those years of hard work, dedication, and savings have gone down the drain. My father never asks for anything and would always put everyone else’s needs before his own. I really wish that there was more that I could do for him in such a stressful time.

The restaurant would have many regular customers who came just to meet my father and have a bite to eat. A smile would always appear on his face when he saw customers enjoying their meal. No matter what it takes, we want to get back on our feet and not disappoint our community. Masala Wok will be back.
