“I want to make sure that every girl in Afghanistan has the chance to study — online, offline, or in any way possible.”
— Yal
Who We Are
In August 2021, as Afghanistan fell under Taliban rule and girls were banned from education, Yal and young educated friends quietly started a secret online education program for Afghan girls.
At that time, Taliban fighters were searching homes. Every sound brought fear. Phones were constantly cleared to avoid detection. Despite threats and danger, Yal did not stop. She chose to be a voice for Afghan women and girls — even when it meant risking everything.
Eventually, due to serious threats and to protect her loved ones, Yal was forced to flee. But the program never stopped.
Today, this volunteer-led program has been running for over four years, providing education, hope, and dignity to girls and women inside Afghanistan.
⸻
What We Do
Our program functions as a secret online school, based on the Afghan education system.
We use Telegram and Google Meet, always prioritizing students’ safety.
• Started with 5 students
• Now serving many students, with more waiting to join
• Classes are taught by:
• Afghan women teachers living inside Afghanistan
• International volunteer women educators supporting Afghan girls
This work is extremely sensitive and done quietly, as education for girls is considered an act of resistance under Taliban rule.
⸻
Our Impact So Far
• 5 students have graduated from our online school program
• 7 students are currently enrolled in higher education and university programs
• Some graduates are now:
• Teaching new students in our program
• Supporting their families with small stipends
• 3 students gained practical skills to support themselves:
• One runs an online shop from home
• Students previously educated before the Taliban takeover were helped to enroll in University of the People for online degrees
Most importantly:
This program has saved lives.
Mothers tell us this education gives their daughters hope — preventing depression, despair, and even suicide.
One mother shared that after girls were banned from midwifery school, a girl in her community took her own life. She said:
“This program keeps our daughters alive. Please don’t let it stop.”
⸻
Why This Program Is Different
Many programs only accept students who already have:
• Internet
• Smartphones
• Computers
Our students do not have these things.
We focus on the most vulnerable girls — those with:
• No internet access
• No personal phone
• No electricity in some areas
If a student cannot afford internet, we provide it.
If there is no electricity, we provide power banks.
We believe education should reach those who need it most — not exclude them.
⸻
Supporting Women Teachers
Due to Taliban restrictions, educated women cannot work outside their homes.
Our program:
• Gives them a safe way to use their skills
• Allows them to teach
• Provides small monthly gifts so they can help their children with basic needs
This restores dignity, purpose, and hope.
⸻
Our Vision
Our goals are simple but powerful:
1. Keep hope alive for Afghan girls in the darkest times
2. Empower them with knowledge
3. Create future opportunities so students can become teachers themselves
4. Prepare girls to earn an internationally recognized school diploma through secret online education
5. Build a future where Afghan women can raise their voices and know their rights
We have also created:
• An online library
• Weekly student knowledge-sharing sessions
