My son Daniel was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes the week before he started primary school. This is a photo of him taken that week.
This year he will finish Year 12. He is a healthy, strong and independent young man. A huge success - but a hard fought victory.
People living with T1D must make an extra 180 decisions every day relative to the average. These are often decisions that are critical to their health and wellbeing. Finger pricks, carb counting, injections, lows, highs - it all takes a toll.
This Father's Day, I challenged myself to run the equivalent of Melbourne to Sydney (via Canberra) before Father's Day 2025, to raise money for JDRF. It's around 1000 kms. I would love you to support me by sponsoring a few steps or by calling me out when I lose motivation. I will keep supporters updated on where I am (virtually) up to.
I am starting with the aim of raising $20,000 - so $20 per km. Given that it takes me about 6 minutes to run a kilometre (wind assisted) this represents a saving of more than 80% off my usual charge out rate.
Funds raised will go to JDRF Australia. JDRF is the leading supporter of T1D research in the world, investing more than $280 million in Australian T1D research since its inception. JDRF has been part of every major breakthrough in T1D care in the past 45 years. Their work makes life better for people living with T1D and provides hope that one day there may be a cure.
