On October 5th, 2017, at the age of 22 months old, Braelyn was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome. Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney disorder that causes your body to pass too much protein in your urine. After multiple years of being in and out of remission, trying multiple medications and hospital admissions, the Nephrotic Syndrome led to kidney failure.
On October 31st, 2022, Braelyn underwent surgery to have a double nephrectomy (removal of both kidneys). As a result, she is required to stay in Vancouver to receive hemodialysis at BC Children’s Hospital 4 days a week, until she can find a kidney donor. She stays with her mother and her 2-year-old brother at the Ronald Macdonald house while Dad flies back and forth to Tumbler Ridge for work bi-weekly.
Please find it in your hearts to donate to this strong young lady to help her family pay for treatments and being displaced for so long.
*From Riley
For the last 10 years, I have made yearly donations to the Children’s Miracle Network which go toward The BC Children’s Hospital. I have found this to be a great cause because it helps young children and families facing serious hardships. No child should have to endure or experience this battle.
We have a local family going through the same battle so I decided to do what I can to help them. Please donate whatever you can to the Go Fund Me attached. Also, a little more motivation! I will be going “Dry” for 31 days. During the “Ry Goes Dry” if I have one sip of alcohol between Feb 15th and March 17th at 5 pm I will match the donations made to the Go Fund Me.
Remax Dawson Creek Realty will be donating as an office to help this family as well. Please open your hearts and wallets to help support the Fowlow Fundraiser and make Riley pay!
February 22 Update From Braelyn's Mom*
Braelyn received the gift of a kidney today from someone who sadly lost their life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.
Surgery was long but she did great, the next 72 hours will be telling to the success of it but she’s already making urine so that’s a good sign. She will spend the next couple days in the ICU recovering. We couldn’t of done this without our support team and everything everyone has done and continues to do for us. Today is the start of her brand new happier and healthier journey. To the family mourning the loss of their loved one, we are so incredibly sorry for your loss. We would never be able to express the feelings we have for your family, but we want you to know how grateful we are. You gave our 7 year old daughter the gift of being a kid again, we will never take a day for granted!! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We are thankful, grateful and beyond blessed for this miracle. #fightingwithbraelyn
March 03 Update From Braelyn's Mom*
The last couple days have been a whirlwind of emotions. Braelyn is okay. She now has a fully functioning kidney and all her numbers have been good. There’s unfortunately been a reoccurrence of fsgs (nephrotic syndrome) in her new kidney. They are following a protocol to try and get ahead of it which involves aggressive treatment. They’ve had success with this treatment in the past but they can’t say for sure in her case just yet. We have to take it day by day. We’re absolutely gutted. We were on top of the world and then pushed back off. But we’ve made it here, still floating in space. But also, still fighting. She’s doing really well from a surgery stand point. We are still doing treatment for the nephrotic syndrome, rituximab infusions and plasma exchange- A procedure in which a machine is used to separate the plasma (the liquid part of the blood) from the blood cells. After the plasma is separated from the blood cells, the blood cells are mixed with a liquid to replace the plasma and are returned to the body. She’s on super high dose steroids for anti rejection so she’s very emotional. Lots of post transplant anxieties. They removed her drain and her catheter. Shes been walking to the playroom so she’s playing and it’s so nice to see
