This gofundme is to ask for support for the care of my brother David's three, four-legged loves, companions, caretakers...
Dogs Roy (90 lbs) and Hi (75 lbs) and his cat Cake. These guys were rescue animals because his heart was big that way. Companions for over nine years, they are what kept DJ going as long as he could in 2018. In our pre-death conversations, I assured him I would care for them - they were his biggest concern. His goodbye note said "love them like you always have."
After his passing 11/9/2018, some of his friends reached out to me and asked how they could help. To me, this was my thing to figure out.
Since Auntie Kathy is now mom to Roy and Hi, initial vet visit (checkup, shots) which David was unable to keep up with, was $200. Roy has hypothyroidism and needs medicine daily. The medicine cost is doable but lab tests to get him regulated over the last 8 months have been $600. Roy also has a predisposition for yeast infections in his ears requiring antibiotics, prescription ear wash, and follow-up appointments - now that this is under control, I am using a preventative ear wash to keep this at bay. Per the vet, both dogs need teeth cleaning - Hi's teeth are especially poor, almost all black. The vet told me on a 7/10/19 visit for a skin problem and follow-up on ears and thyroid, teeth cleaning cost is $600 for Roy... Hi’s would be near that cost. Food (and litter) are $89/month. The animals should be on preventative care for fleas and heartworms but I am trying to avoid those costs by using natural pet care products.
It was my promise, mine alone; whether I had promised or not, I could NEVER NOT bring them into my home. They have lived with me before so have adapted well to the loss. David would feel much relief and peace over this.
It's a family responsibility to handle costs for arrangements after death. Mortuary services and moving after David's passing was $1900. I had $2200 set aside for unpaid 2017 taxes so the money was used for arrangements instead. Otherwise, as for so many of us, this was all I had.
