Four Finches Needs to Rebuild the Nest
Donation protected
In November 2019, I relocated Four Finches Flowers and Gifts from an alley in south Evanston, to Central Street, an established retail street in north Evanston. The business specialized in custom floral arrangements for individuals, corporate events, Northwestern University functions and weddings. I saw the potential for significant growth in the new, highly visible storefront, so I expanded my retail offerings. I was extremely excited about opening in this proven, dynamic, retail location.
Then came Covid. I was forced to close the shop. All events stopped. What did not stop was the obligation to pay rent and utilities, insurance and the monies owed to vendors for merchandise that was now sitting in the shop. Fortunately, my landlord allowed me to pay half rent for well over a year. Ultimately, I dipped into personal funds and paid my landlord all the monies owed, close to $20,000, late in 2021.
Unfortunately, the journey back from Covid has been long and frustratingly slow. Even as mandates lifted and businesses slowly reopened, event and wedding business is still not even close to pre-Covid levels. And with an uncertain economy, retail has also been painfully slow to recover. Consequently, with a substantial loss of operating capital, debts are beginning to mount, finances are dwindling, and the shop’s future is in jeopardy. Like many others, I am turning to Gofundme to raise capital, which will be used to clear up payables, ensure future rent obligations, increase brand awareness via professional social media advice, and make minor cosmetic improvements to the space. These funds will keep the business afloat. As a small business owner with limited resources, I am appealing to those of you who have experienced what Four Finches offers, and hope, that you might invest—of any amount, to keep a unique, independent, woman-owned business, open and thriving.
Thank you for your consideration.
