In 2006 I met and soon after married my husband Jonathan and the Greensboro Police Department. When one marries a police officer, they marry a huge family. A family that is like no other family, you see. Through the good and bad, we are the thin blue line. I quickly met many officers and their wives including Bill and Melissa White. We became instant friends and over the years we have been able to share in those monumental moments that friends share. We have celebrated weddings, birthdays, births of babies and special moments within our GPD family.
Not all of our monumental moments have come with celebrations, however. In July of this year, Bill started having some abdominal discomfort. In an effort to find out what was going on his doctor ordered a colonoscopy. On August 3rd, during his test, they found a mass in his colon. During the following weeks he went through multiple tests and numerous doctor's appointments to ascertain the severity. Bill was given the news that from what the doctor's could see he was a best case patient, meaning it had not spread and they felt they could do surgery to remove the mass with little down time.
On the 27th of August he had a partial colectomy at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. As Bill was recovering from surgery the doctor came to speak to Melissa, his wife, and update her on the surgery. The doctor told her that his tumor removal went well, they were able to attach his colon so no colostomy bag would be needed, but unfortunately they had found something they had not planned on. As it turned out Bill's tumor had spread, but not to other organs instead it had shed into the lining of his abdominal cavity. Unfortunately this is very hard to treat and he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Colon/Peritoneal Cancer.
There is a procedure, called a HIPEC, that could help extend his life (there is a 10% chance of it curing him) but there are many factors to be looked at to see if he will qualify for this. If he is not able to have this procedure he was given a year to live. At this time he is undergoing chemotherapy to see if it shrinks the tumors and if it does he will hopefully have the procedure in the next few months.
Jonathan and I are prayerfully hopeful that Bill WILL be in that 10% and he WILL be cured! While Bill and Melissa focus on fighting this disease and spending time as a family, making memories with their babies Holden and Kennedy, Jonathan and I ask that if you are reading this and feel led, please help us support Bill and Melissa. Help us take away the stress of being out of work, running back and forth to Winston multiple times per week and all of the things that come up financially when a family is faced with a diagnosis such as this.
Our thanks will never be enough for the love and support that we know will come for our precious friends. If nothing else, please keep this family in your prayers. Add them to your prayers list and lift them up to the ultimate healer.
