Ten years ago a very special little soul fought to be born. In a womb with five brothers and sisters that had long given up the fight, little Lucius and three remaining siblings fought to inhale their first breath. Their fight was just beginning, and only baby Lu would survive.
Our Lucius was the lone survivor, and like a true gladiator he would have to keep fighting. He was nearly overcome by food allergies before he was a year of age, but he fought to stay with us. With a compromised immune system pneumonia nearly took him away again by the time he was two years old, but he fought to stay with us.
Lucius has spent his life loving every single moment, every single sunrise, every fallen leaf and new person he's met from the day he left the whelping pen starting with Henry Winkler, his first new friend. The love of Lucius does not discriminate. If you've met him in person you know the serious make-out sessions all too well. Yes, he certainly cannot hold his licker!
For ten years he has been my constant companion, my dearest friend, my confidante, my teacher, my protector, my business partner, my advisor, and mentor to countless dogs and student trainers. He has always been there for me from early morning workout partner to Service Dog. He has taught me everything he knows about dog behavior and psychology, he has brought me courage and pulled me from my bed when I was in too much pain to even open my eyes. He has been wise enough to bring me the phone when I needed more help than he could offer, and he has pushed me when I needed growth. He has shown me what it means to be faithful and loving, kind but strong, patient, generous and brutally honest. He has always demonstrated the very best work ethic, but has always reminded me to balance it with play and he's never allowed me to take my yoga practice so seriously that his antics couldn't make me laugh. If you've been in my yoga classes chances are Lu has snuck in a kiss, cuddled on your mat, or supported your down-dog.
The past six months our super dog has continued his fight like a champion. With your support, your love and your guidance, he survived a splenectomy and refused to give up. With your prayers he was able to heal and get back to sharing all he knows and mentoring more dogs in need, being a role model, a big brother, and a teacher to all. He has walked wolves and dogs, he has enforced many place commands, he has taught young pups and old dogs how to socialize appropriately, he has led by example, he has been an incredible ambassador, he's made us laugh, and he's made you fall in love.
He also needs your help. I need your help. It's not easy for me to ask as I'm usually the one in charge of all the helping, the guiding, the advising, the fixing, and the saving. At 10 years old he is full of life and love. He doesn't realize Lymphoma is threatening to take him away form us yet again.
After $4,000 in diagnostics we are so relieved that it is not showing (at this time) in other areas of his body. His MRI came out beautiful, his Cerebral Spinal Fluid Tap came out clear, chest x-rays, organ ultrasound, all good. The bone marrow procedure, and his blood work came out great. In fact, in the 18 days from the blood test on Sunday Oct 18th, 2015 when he had his first set of seizures (and hopefully his last) to the blood work he did on Thursday Nov 5th, his blood work actually showed improvement! We are blessed to have one of the world's best Oncologists on our team, Dr. Greg Ogilvie!
We are also fortunate the prognosis for Lucius is very good! He has a very treatable form of Lymphoma, and we suspect he will breeze through chemo with hardly any down time. Dr. Ogilvie helps dogs each day into remission and live long, fulfilled lives. Lucius isn't ready to leave us, he's not a quitter, and he never backs down from a fight. He's all heart, and he's all in!
There is only one more giant obstacle standing in our way. The full chemo treatment will cost just over $8,000. We are very lucky they are able to start him right away. They had one appointment open this Tuesday, November 17th, and the first of many payments will be due. We truly need your help, your support, your love and your prayers. #TeamATEOYL is working overtime to help raise the funds in every way that we can, and you know we are always willing to work overtime for it. However, we could truly use your help.
There are many ways in which you can help King Lu:
1. You can donate any amount, as often as you wish, right here on YouCaring. You can share this link on your social media platforms.
2. You can share our promo video (viral would be awesome!), and tell all of your friends, family, and co-workers about At the end of your leash, share your testimonials, and let them know that right now is the very best time to train their beloved companions. If you would like business cards or flyers, just ask!
3. You can attend our Canine Wellness seminar coming up in just a few weeks. For details, please contact me - I promise, this is going to be a serious can't-miss learning opportunity that will not be repeated! This is going to be a one time fundraising event!
4. If you are a current client, now is the perfect time to begin your ForceFree Training program, you can sign up for as many Super Dog Maintenance & Pack to Basics Socials as possible on www.meetup.com/socalpackleaders, or you could sign-up for the Super Power Hours when you need extra help! All proceeds will go directly to help heal Lucius!
5. Attend my "Essential Yoga" classes on Monday evenings; relax, destress, and balance your soul with myself, Lucius, and the rest of the pack before his Tuesday chemotherapy appointments. I'm sure he'd love to share kisses and cuddle on the mat with you!
For my hero, for the love of Lucius, we are grateful for any amount you are able to donate, and any help that you are able to offer.
With much love and gratitude,
Jen, Lucius, Dharma, Nola and #TeamATEOYL #ATEOYLFamily
