Bringing the Spice back to Sugar & Spice

Who are we?
My name is Brian, and my wife is Patty. We are the human-parents of our three cat-kids Sugar, Spice and Taffy. The purpose of this campaign is to raise funds to help support our little guy in the middle. Let me begin by telling you a little about our family.

In May of 2013 we, and a few other families, were forced from our homes due to eminent domain - you've got to build bypasses. A neighbor of ours discovered two little orange kittens that had been dropped off in their garage. They kept an eye on them for some time, but there was no sign of the mother cat. They came to us and asked if we could help them. We agreed to do so, and this was when "the twins" entered our lives. Their ears and eyes were still closed when we met them. They had to be bottle fed, which we did every 6 hours as directed. We made sure that they did all their business, and helped them in making their pee-pees and poo-poos. We found ways to play with them and get them moving about. We were there when they learned to crawl, to walk, to run, to climb, to cause trouble. They were our kids.

"The Twins" playing in and around my shoes. I still wear these. Sporting the claw marks and everything.

We gave them the names Sugar and Spice - as calling them "the twins" did not fit their personalities nearly as well. Even though their names imply that one is the sweet one and the other a bit more saucy - they are both good and loving cats (each with their own naughty side). They have been through a move, they have been to martial arts camps, through weddings, they have been around for hard times, wonderful times, and everything in between.

What is this for?
This campaign is for Spice. He is definitely the Momma's-cat. Spice sleeps to Patty's right side every single night. He typically lays on his back with his paws up. Even if he wakes up, he will not move from Patty's side. If Patty gets up, he too will get up. A bit more reluctantly if he is tired, but he always will. When she brushes her teeth in the morning and night, he will go sit on the toilet and stay with her until she is done. When she goes downstairs he follows. She moves to the living room, he goes and sits next to her favorite spot - just waiting for her. When she is away he will snuggle into her place on the bed, and just snooze. He brings her catnip mice, balls with bells and wands with ribbon.

A brief history.
On Sunday, October 21, Spice was acting extremely lethargic. I had prepared their dinner, and when Patty checked to see why he wasn't going to eat he cried at being touched. This is something Spice has never done. He is an extremely affectionate cat who loves food second only to being with Patty. We kept an eye on him - his breathing did not seem right, his inner eye-lids were showing and he had absolutely no appetite. Taking his temperature we found he was at 104.2°F. Speaking with a friend of ours we were advised to take him in. During his time at the emergency vet his temperature rose to around 105° before it started coming down. He was admitted and given fluids, antibiotics and a steroid treatment. This seemed to fair well for him. It took him another day after coming home to start eating and drinking again, and of course the medications would continue for another two weeks. Everything seemed okay with Spice. He was back to being his normal sweetheart/naughty self.

Saturday, November 17, Spice is acting normal throughout the day until around 9:00 at night. We prepare their dinner as we always do by knocking a spoon against the rim of their can - sort of a "come-and-git-it" style of calling them to dinner. Taffy and Sugar came downstairs to eat and took their usual positions on the island to watch their dinner being prepared. Spice was still upstairs on the bed. Patty, knowing that we had made the call-of-the-wild told Spice that it was time to eat and tried to get him to start heading down. He fussed about it and stayed put. This was concerning, and became more so as his behaviors began to replicate how he was when he was sick only a month prior. We kept an eye on him throughout the night, and into Sunday morning.

Sunday, November 18, Spice is still not quite feeling well. He has gone to the bathroom and taken care of his business, but he was still acting very lethargic and sensitive. We go about doing some of our usual Sunday things, but by the afternoon we decide that since he has not shown any significant improvement that we will take him to the emergency vet to at least get some fluids in him as he had not had a drink since the night before. We get him prepped and take him on up. He is not a fan of being at the vet. As soon as he had a moment he moved into the carrying case - knowing this was where he needed to be to go home. As much as we wanted him to come home, we wanted him to be well first. We opted for him to stay and to get treated.

Monday, November 19, Spice has responded well to treatment, but we still are completely clueless as to what needs to be done. He is now working with internal medicine at the vet hospital and they are working on a couple of options. So what does Spice need? Simply put - we don't know yet. We are hoping that he will not need much as far as treatment goes, but right now we need to know what exactly is going on.

Spice before he went back to start his diagnoses. He was mystified by the decor and fish tank in the vet's lobby.

What do we need?
The total for all of the diagnostic work and treatment thus far is coming to around $3,000. Including what we have already taken care of during his previous visit, his total is going to be in the area of $5,000. We have tapped into every resource we can think of. I have maxed out my credit card, taken out an additional line of credit (which is now also maxed), emptied our bank account and asked family for help. So far we have brought in a total of $3,500 between both visits, but we are still short by about $1,500 to pay for the entire amount. In addition we do not know what the final bill will be yet (pending additional testing, treatments, etc.). For this we are asking help in raising the $1,500 to help pay for Spice's care. I have included the statement at the bottom of this page.

Spice is a lover. He always greets guests and shows them his toys. He knows that you want to pet him and helps you get into the optimal position to do so. Anything that can be donated toward helping Spice would be greatly appreciated. Anything that is received through this campaign will be put toward funding Spice's care. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for contributing toward helping an awesome cat feel better again. If you cannot contribute, we understand and it is okay. If you can share this for others it would be just as helpful.

Again, thank you!
