Let's work together to retire Briayna Cuffie's student debt!

Hi, my name is Lotte, and I am launching a reparative community campaign to pay down my dear friend and colleague Briayna Cuffie's educational debt.

 

If you know Bri, you know what a gem she is: brilliant strategist, committed community activist, and shining light in the world of reparative genealogy. Unstoppable! In fact, Bri graduated in 2015 with a BA in International Relations - but with a six-figure student debt.

 

"Compared to a middle-class white family, which has the wherewithal to send a child to a good school, pay for activities that strengthen scholarship and get that child through college – in the black community, it takes an entire village of people and their combined resources to get a black child just through high school and then only a small percent can go on to college.

 

I was effectively raised by a single mom since my dad worked three jobs to make ends meet until I went to college. When I turned fourteen, I was working two jobs; in the summer, I was usually working three. This way, I could help contribute to the household as well."

 

I don’t believe any of my white peers have six-digit debt. Additionally, my white friends didn't have to buy their own textbooks and a good chunk of my friends did not have jobs. The few that did, the income was their “play money.” They didn't have to send chunks of their money home to help make ends meet.

Our Goals:

 

I am inviting you to join me in investing in Briayna's future.

 

Each year Briayna is saddled with crippling levels of debt - with monthly payments in excess of $750 - $1,000 per month. She started with 5+ loans but has just one loan outstanding; as she chips away at it, Bri ensures that all outstanding interest is paid down so that our contributions leverage hers and pay down principal. To simplify the process, I act as the fiduciary, collecting the funds, making the principal payments, and keeping our reparative community updated about our progress.

 

The best part? As we relieve Briayna of debt, she is able to pay it forward and continue her important community work.

 

We met last year's goal of paying off the first loan - $7,000 was remaining.

We also met this year's goal of paying off a larger loan with $16,000 remaining.

 

We're down to one final loan - as of fall 2022, the balance is just over $50K. Bri has applied for Biden Administration student debt relief; if she receives the full $20K, we may have just $30K left to go! Stay tuned!
