For Mike with Love

Donation protected
I imagine hearing the words organ transplant is like something out of the Twilight Zone and it could never happen to you or someone you love. I wish that were true. Unfortunately there are countless lives dealing with this reality every day. Did you know approximately 20 people die every day waiting for an organ transplant? Did you know you could be denied for financial reasons and never make it to the list? Patients going through a transplant work-up/process need to prove they can afford expenses associated with a transplant or they cannot proceed with the process. This is the point my brother-in-law Mike is at. He needs to finish the process to be placed on the list for an organ transplant but is first required to show enough funds to pay for housing/living and medical expenses to live 2 hours from home for up to 3 months post-transplant. Once he can show adequate funds he can continue in the process. The average liver transplant costs approximately 600,000 dollars including first year medical costs. Depending on insurance the patient’s responsibility is about 120,000, housing is about 5,000 if you live greater than 75 miles from the transplant center, and not to mention lost wages for both spouse and husband. Considering these factors you are looking at about 135,000 dollars. This is the price of a future.
It becomes a harsh reality when your sister, your best friend calls you crying saying anyone can live if the price is right. I am asking at this time on behalf of the family for donations to help Mike continue on this unexpected journey. If you are unable to donate at this time prayers are always accepted. Please add this wonderful family to your prayer chain. We are also encouraging everyone to register as an organ donor and get involved in your local donor network to help save lives. All funds raised will be transferred to a medical expense account and used only for medical costs and costs associated with an organ transplant. Any unused funds will be donated to transplants.org or helphopelive.org
