My name is Jim Norton and I am starting this campaign for My Niece's (Sue) Daughter Maui. Maui is a precious little 5 year old girl who always has a smile on her face. I will add some recent photos. My niece clearly has a challenge on her hands because she is a single mom with a daughter who has some severe health issues.

On June 30th, 2016, just 5 days before Maui’s 5th birthday, their lives were changed dramatically. Maui was diagnosed with two optic pathway gliomas.  These brain tumors are located on her optic nerves, and when they progress, they press on the nerves and cause Maui’s vision to worsen. Although these tumors are not cancerous, they are serious, and are treated as if cancerous. The tumors can affect Maui’s vision & functions of her endocrine system. They could affect hormone production, salt and water balance, appetite and sleep. Since diagnosis, Maui has lost vision in her left eye. Her right eye vision is currently fair with eyeglasses. The doctors say that Maui’s lost vision will not be restored.

After meeting with medical specialists in the Bronx, Maui’s treatment plan was determined. Maui’s treatment plan is for 12-18 months of weekly chemotherapy treatments. The goal is to shrink the brain tumors and stabilize her vision. Sue & Maui travel 90 minutes each way by car from their Dutchess County home to the Bronx hospital that is treating Maui. Maui has endured 22 chemotherapy treatments thus far.  Maui is a remarkably resilient & spirited child who is always happy & smiling. She is kind-hearted, strong,  & so courageous.  Maui doesn’t let anything knock her down, she continues to be positive and never complains. The diagnosis has devastated Sue, not only because of the uncertainty of Maui’s future, but because of what her little girl has to endure. Sue is a strong woman and her faith has enabled her to get through this difficult time.

Due to Maui’s illness, a significant financial strain has been placed on Sue. Due to Maui’s illness and all that it entails, Sue can only work P/T in a temporary substitute position. Maui has had multiple hospital visits for subsequent illnesses, doctor appointments, treatment days, & absent sick days from school in which Sue cannot work. Finances are tight, and in addition to mortgage payments, land/school taxes, utilities, car/home insurance, trash, water/sewer payments, home & car repairs/maintenance, there are additional expenses she is incurring such as gas, parking fees and other incidentals.

Sue’s goal is for Maui to have as typical a childhood as any 5 year old should and to allow Maui to live her life to the fullest. Sue wants to minimize the impact of Maui’s illness on her daily life. Please, help me enable Sue to provide for Maui and to meet all her needs, and to allow Sue to continue to stay home with Maui when her illness dictates. Any donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and please share this page to allow more people the opportunity to hear Maui’s story.

Sue's expenses are currently outstripping her income. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
