Forgotten Women of Wakefield - Florence Beaumont Sculpture

Donation protected
Hello,

my name is Sarah Cobham and I am the woman behind Dream Time Creative and The Forgotten Women of Wakefield blue plaque scheme.

Since 2018 when there were only four women named on blue plaques we now have 37 women named on blue plaques, with two more plaques honouring five more to be unveiled in March and May 2026.

If you've been on one of the walks, or if you know me, you'll know how passionate I am about bringing the story of one particular woman to life - that of Florence Beaumont, a leading suffragist who campaigned for equal voting rights for ALL women to the League of Nations and whose actions led to the right to vote being given to ALL women in 1928.

In time for this 100 year anniversary I'd like to raise £10,000 to erect a sculpture to commemorate the life and good works of Florence, a lasting reminder of her great achievements. She was such a special woman that she deserves a permanent memorial alongside her blue plaques.

If you'd like to read more about Florence's achievements visit the website You can read here about many more of women celebrated on blue plaques.

I, and my team, will continue to raise funds through our heritage walking tours but I am also asking for your help to raise this money through your generous donations.

This fundraiser will be launched at CoffeeWrite Cafe in Wakefield on Tuesday, 2 December. The team will be there, dressed as Florence would expect, telling stories and sharing cakes and fruit, along with very fine coffee, tea and creative activities.

It would be great if you could join the team, the event is FREE to everyone and you're invited to celebrate with us between 4pm and 6pm.

Alternatively, book your free ticket via Eventbrite

The Round our Way team has a full program of events and walks for 2026, starting at the Wakefield Rhubarb festival in February. All of the heritage walks are bookable through Eventbrite and they are promoted on my Facebook page. Tickets for Spring events will be available early in the New Year.

Everything I raise will go directly to the Florence fund and everyone working on this project offers their time voluntarily.

It's important that artists are correctly paid for their creative work and the money raised will be used to pay for sculptors and materials.

As the project develops I will share with you drawings, location and other information to keep you up to date with progress.

Thank you

Sarah Cobham
