Beautiful, brutal, and fragile.
A foreign warrior seeking peace in a distant land encounters the possibility of human connection… until a desperate samurai is hired to hunt him down.
Set in the deep winter forests of Canada, FOREIGN is about two warriors trapped by violence, exploring identity, survival, loneliness, and new territory within the historical samurai action genre in a beautiful yet unforgiving landscape.
Why Samurai?
I grew up in Japan, and ever since I was a child, I have loved samurai stories.
My grandfather introduced me to samurai films and television shows when I was young, and that passion has stayed with me ever since. I grew up watching films such as Ran, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Twilight Samurai, Zatoichi, Love and Honor, Baragaki, Mumon, The Last Samurai, and more recently Ikusagami.
Beyond watching them, I spent many years writing stories involving swords and samurai. I also practiced kendo, karate, and jiujitsu to better understand the physical and mental aspects of combat.
Last year, my grandfather passed away. To commemorate him, I made a short samurai action film called Issen, which was shot in the grasslands of New Zealand. The experience was incredibly rewarding. The film received a Best Action award and an Official Selection at international film festivals. The film is still awaiting updates from several international film festivals. If you would like to watch the full film, please feel free to reach out, and I will be happy to share a private viewing link with you.
The project, Issen, reminded me how much I love this genre and how much more there is still to explore. With FOREIGN, I want to venture into new territory, placing grounded and emotional samurai action within the beautiful, brutal, and timeless landscape of the Canadian winter.
With FOREIGN, I want to continue that journey.
I want to explore areas of samurai cinema that I personally do not see very often: faster and more grounded combat, emotional subtlety, cultural displacement, loneliness, and the humanity of people living through violent times.
If and when FOREIGN resonates with audiences, I would love to continue exploring this period, its characters, and its themes through future projects. Whether as additional short films, a series, or eventually a feature film, I believe there are many stories still waiting to be told.
My hope is not only to create an exciting samurai film, but also to contribute new emotional and martial arts perspectives to a genre that has inspired me throughout my life.
Why Yasuke? - African Slave Warrior in Japan
FOREIGN takes place in the Azuchi–Momoyama period (after the Sengoku era), a few years after the death of Oda Nobunaga, from 1585 to 1590.
The story follows Yasuke, a real historical figure who arrived in Japan with Portuguese missionaries and was later traded into the service of Nobunaga, one of the most powerful warlords in Japanese history.
Very little is known about him, and especially about what happened to him after Nobunaga’s death.
That mystery fascinates me.
For much of his life, Yasuke’s path was determined by other people. Then Nobunaga died. For perhaps the first time in his life, he was truly free.
After a lifetime of service, warfare, and survival, what does a man do with freedom?
That question became the foundation of this story.
Why Canada? - The Endless Snowfield
Canada’s nature is vast, beautiful, and timeless.
I worked in Toronto between 2018 and 2024, where I met many talented and creative people. During that time, I was introduced to several incredible locations, many of which resemble Japan in winter while remaining easily accessible from Toronto.
I have rarely seen samurai films set in deep snow, let alone filmed during a Canadian winter.
The cold makes pain feel sharper. It makes exhaustion more visible with white breath.
There is something beautiful about snow, but also something brutal.
Another important element is the diversity of Canada’s acting community. For the role of Yasuke, many talented and passionate actors applied, and I was immediately reassured that Canada was the right place to bring this character to life.
I would love to explore and celebrate the Canadian landscape and the talented community that supported me during my years there.
Action - Violence & Tragedy
One of the reasons Yasuke fascinates me as a character is the possibility of combining different martial traditions and experiences. I do not imagine him as a savage or a superhero. I imagine him as a skilled survivor who has spent his entire life adapting.
In contrast, the assassin hunting him is a veteran of one of the most brutal periods in Japanese history.
Their combat styles reflect their lives.
Each of them is a skilled person forced into a terrible situation.
The action in FOREIGN combines kenjutsu, iai, jiujitsu, and striking. The goal is not flashy choreography, but believable violence. While I love action films, I want violence to feel frightening, painful, and tragic.

Where the Funding Goes - People first
The majority of the funding will go directly toward the cast and crew who are helping bring this project to life.
The film itself will be shot over two days in the Canadian winter, but a significant amount of work will happen before the cameras roll. We plan to spend considerable time rehearsing and refining the action sequences so that they feel safe, authentic, and emotionally meaningful.
The cast will also be working hard on Japanese pronunciation and cultural details to help create an authentic portrayal of the period.
Costumes and props will be carefully selected, with many items sourced directly from Japan.
Every contribution helps us compensate the people involved fairly and raise the overall quality of the final film.
Support and Participation
In difficult times, making art can sometimes feel like a luxury.
Perhaps making a historical samurai film feels even more so.
However, at its heart, FOREIGN is a story about misunderstanding, prejudice, loneliness, and the search for human connection. Those themes feel just as relevant today as they would have centuries ago.
Yes, samurai action is exciting.
I find it interesting because it represents years of discipline, sacrifice, and dedication. That is why it feels tragic when those skills are ultimately used for violence.
That tragic tension is one of the reasons I continue to love action films as an art form.
Whether you choose to contribute financially, share the campaign with others, or simply follow the journey, your support genuinely means a great deal to us.
Every contribution helps bring this project closer to reality and helps us support the talented people working hard behind the scenes.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about FOREIGN.
We look forward to sharing this journey with you.

Risks and Challenges
Since the film is set in Toronto during winter, capturing the city’s distinctive cold and snowy atmosphere is essential to the story. However, I am currently based in New Zealand, meaning much of the pre-production process must be conducted remotely.
This includes casting, rehearsals, production planning, wardrobe preparation, equipment research, and location scouting. Working across countries and time zones presents communication and scheduling challenges, requiring close collaboration with Toronto-based cast and crew throughout development.
I intend to arrive in Toronto in December and dedicate at least seven days to final rehearsals, in-person location scouting, production meetings, and equipment testing before filming begins. Principal photography is planned over 3 shoot days to accommodate weather, scheduling changes, or unforeseen production challenges.
As an independent filmmaker, I understand the importance of preparation, flexibility, and clear communication. By combining thorough remote planning with dedicated on-the-ground preparation, I am confident the project can be completed successfully while maintaining both creative quality and production efficiency.
