From the winner’s circle to the slaughterhouse, the tragic life of a racehorse
Gregory is a 26-year-old horse who spent his life being used by people, first as a racehorse and then as workhorse. When Gregory became too old and weak to be useful, he was sent to a kill pen to be auctioned off and sold for meat.
The night before Gregory was scheduled to go to auction, a network of equine rescue advocates banded togethertosavehim. Smokey Chestnut Farm Rescue in Massachusetts offered to give him a forever home. Then it was discovered that Gregory was critically ill. Kill pens do not feed their horses, so Gregory had likely not eaten for weeks and was literally starving. He had also been left outside in a muddy paddock for days and subjected to harsh weather elements.
Gregory had to be trailered to a hospital an hour away. They found that he was suffering from pneumonia, salmonella, and kidney failure. Gregory was immediately given fluids, antibiotics and pain medication, a warm bath, and lots of gentle care, but his body was shutting down and we feared he would not make it.
Fortunately, Gregory has a strong will to live. He turned a corner on Thanksgiving Day when began eating solid foods, and he has been improving each day since! Despite all Gregory has been through, he is charming everyone he meets with his sweet and trusting nature.

Gregory’s veterinary bills have so far reached $9,000 and are continuing to add up. Smokey Chestnut is a small 501c3 non-profit run by volunteers, and this amount is far out of our reach.
Please make a gift to help heal Gregory so he can spend the rest of his life in well-deserved peace and comfort. Your contribution will help pay for previous and on-going veterinary services, including:
● Antibiotics, pain mediation, and fluids
● Treatment for overgrown and neglected teeth and hoofs
● Fees for tests including a lung ultrasound
● Daily board, food, and grooming
● Transport from PA to MA
