As the fire call came over the pagers of the Fireman of The Lake City Fire Department at 12:18am on Tuesday October 27th 2020 for response to a single vehicle accident, the Fire Department, EMT, and Police Department responded within minutes. They worked valorously to get one of their own Firefighters out of his truck and to Lake City Mayo Clinic Emergency Department. Mayo One helicopter was already in route to Lake City to transport Clayton Brandt to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. His family was all there with him and communicated with the Doctors in the ICU unit on a minute by minute basis over a cell phone call, on speaker phone, for all of us to hear as we were not allowed to see him or be with him. As we all listened to the doctors tell us everything they were finding we stood together as a family in absolute shock not only by what the doctors were informing us of but also the fact that we were even there because our brother, son, husband, friend, father, brother to the LCFD, only a little over an hour prior was in perfectly good health and smiling and enjoying life. The Doctors told us only after a few short hours, which felt like days as every second was so unknown, that Clayton was not going to be coming home with us. Everything they were doing to save his life was failing to work and we were losing him little by little every minute. When his team of Critical Care Doctors and all of his family began to understand that this day was Clayton's last day of this chapter of life, artificial life support was discontinued and Clayton fell into his eternal rest only minutes after. On the very same day that his family of the Lake City Fire Department watched as their brother was lifted into the air they never knew how high he was truly going and that he was not coming back down. At 7:18pm Tuesday October 27th of 2020 we all lost Clayton, at a young 41 years old.
Clayton was a humble protective and heroic father to his children, a proud and brave Firefighter, an amazing fisherman, a friend that was loyal and loving, a hilarious sense of humor (mostly when he was cracking jokes about you), and a loving man that lived with humility and sacrifice to ensure the people he had in his life always knew he loved them.
This fundraiser is to show our support and love for Clayton’s family while they are going through the devastation of losing him and everything that follows so quickly. The importance of the support we show is truly about what we can do for his daughter Kayla. Clayton worked excruciating and diligent hours at Hearth and Home in Lake City so he could give his daughter the best things in life now and in her future. We want to continue to help grow and build on what he has started so that Kayla has every opportunity to be, go, and do what she has the desire and drive to do in her life. Clayton will always be proud of his little girl and she can be proud of everything she accomplishes. Kayla, at the age of 9, has lost her father. We want to share our support to preserve her future that Clayton worked so hard for. Clayton’s family is now living without their young brother, uncle, husband, Godfather, Friend, LCFD brother, cousin, nephew, father, and son... We will pick up where you left off Clayton. Our pledge in this fundraiser..."We will honor your daughter. We will never let your smile, voice, spirit, or love drift away. And yes, we will cheer for the Miami Dolphins once in a while. You are here with us and we will make you proud. We love you".
