Our neighbor Richard, a disabled veteran in a wheelchair, was fortunate to have caring neighbors, who have supported him over the years. We were never too far to lend a hand—helping lift him after falls, calling paramedics, taking him to the VA for treatment, and making sure he and his beloved dog, Zach, were never alone. Zach was Richard’s constant companion and best friend, always by his side through every challenge. When Richard’s health declined and was hospitalized, we helped care for Zach. When he was moved to a rehabilitation center and later placed on hospice, we continued caring for him. In Richard’s final days, we brought Zach to be by his side one last time. Zach stayed with Richard until the moment he passed away, and now Zach is grieving the loss of the person he loved most.
Now, Zach needs help. Because Richard was disabled and unable to drive or walk easily, routine veterinary care became difficult over the years. We recently took Zach to an affordable veterinary surgery clinic after noticing a severe odor coming from his mouth. The diagnosis wasn’t good: Zach has advanced dental disease and a possible fistula from an old damaged tooth. The veterinary team believes Zach will need extensive dental cleaning, 15–20 tooth extractions, medications and pain management, neutering, and an ablation procedure.
Despite everything, Zach is gentle, loving, and trusting. He has already endured the loss of the person he loved most. We want to give him the comfort, relief, and medical care he deserves so he can live the rest of his life pain-free and safe. If Richard could have afforded this care for Zach, he absolutely would have. We are asking for help now on behalf of both of them.
Any donation—no matter the amount—will go directly toward Zach’s veterinary treatment. If you cannot donate, sharing this fundraiser would mean the world to us.
Thank you for helping us honor Richard’s memory by caring for the loyal companion who never left his side.
