Guttersen, Brian James 9/30/1984 - 2/1/2021 Grand Rapids age 36, died unexpectedly Monday, February 1, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Guttersen. Brian is survived by his wife, Lauren; son, Griffin; mother, Kris; mother-in-law, Marie Woodard; father-in-law, Dan De Hoek; brother, Erik; sister, Leah (Mark) Cardillo; brothers & sisters-in-law, Matt (Kaeta) De Hoek, Brian (Lindsey) De Hoek, Jonathan (Maggie) De Hoek; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; nephews, Greyson, Everett, Parker, Hudson, Dexter; and nieces, Landon and Loralie. Brian proudly served his country in the United States Army where he achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class. He served two tours in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom with the 173rd 2-503D Airborne Brigade as a part of Chosen Company. For his actions during the Battle of Wanat he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal with V device (Valor). Other military awards include: Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, 2-Army Commendation Medals, and other various personal and unit citations. On active duty he spent time in Korea, Italy, and Germany. Brian returned home to Michigan and served in the Army Reserves. First, with the 321st PSYOP Company in Grand Rapids where he later became Detachment NCOIC. He transitioned to the Exercise Branch 3, 3rd BDE, Great Lakes Training Division in Livonia where he was currently serving. Brian was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend. He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors and was a lifelong fan of the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Lions. He lived an extraordinary life surrounded by people who loved and adored him. He was passionate about helping others grow and thrive. His support, training, and mentorship of fellow soldiers throughout his career was something he was extremely proud of. His sense of humor, smile, and kindness will be missed by all who knew him. Celebration of life to be scheduled in the future.
