For the Birds - Giving thanks to Dr Anne McDonald

As the owner of the Night Owl Bird Hospital in Vancouver, and the Avian Medical Director of Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary, Dr. Anne McDonald has dedicated her life to the health and wellbeing of birds. In 2017 Dr. McDonald was awarded the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association Humane Award for her pivotal role in the rescue of the World Parrot Refuge (WPR) birds in Coombs, BC, which is believed to be the largest avian rescue effort in Canadian history. In the 30 years that Night Owl Bird Hospital (NOBH) has operated, Dr. McDonald has personally taken in hundreds of surrendered birds. She ensures that they receive everything they need in medical care, and where she can, finds them loving forever homes. Those that cannot be rehomed due to their complex medical needs stay in her care. She does this because she is the embodiment of compassion and dedication.
Dr. McDonald is the most selfless, caring person any of us will ever meet. She is the rock of our bird community. If you are one of the many loving families that have opened their hearts to a WPR or NOBH bird, or if she has saved your bird’s life following an injury or illness, you are one of the many who owe her a debt that can never fully be repaid. She truly cares about every single bird that walks through the door. Every. Single. One. It’s an enormous emotional (and financial) burden to carry.
This year marks the 30th Anniversary of Dr. McDonald purchasing Night Owl Bird Hospital, and it would be wonderful if we in the bird community could come together and show our appreciation for her dedication over the years. A group of volunteers has gotten together to present her with a gift and a fund to use as she sees fit to help the birds surrendered into her care. Donations to this fund will be for the birds only.
