For Raul, For Papi

It is with great sadness that we have to share with the community the passing of Raul Manuel Barriero, aka “Papi” of Papi’s Empanadas, unexpectedly on the afternoon of January 11, 2021. Raul was a true friend and loved by many. He had a smile that lit up a room and a heart of gold. He didn't give a second thought to offering help to others.
Raul touched our community in many ways. Most recently, during COVID, Chef Raul heard and answered our prayers, HOT empanadas delivered to our homes. Many of us remember sitting by the phone awaiting his weekly empanada schedule. Raul loved talking to the community. If you had an idea, he could make it into an empanada. If he couldn’t make it into an empanada, he could tell you how to be creative in making a dish. Some of his food creativity could also be found in the Elated Elephants products. His passion for food was second only to his love for family and friends.
Raul was a passionate, committed, humble, kind and generous member of the Livingston community. He grew up in Newark and was actively involved Club España and he was a Seton Hall Prep graduate. Not only does he have a tremendous family here in the U.S., but a large extended family in Galacia, Spain.
It is in these times of loss and sadness when people come together to help one another make it through, to support the people we care for. Raul was always there for his Livingston community and as a community we want to easy any stress on his family caused by outstanding costs and what comes afterwards. Unfortunately, with all of the emotional pain and stress that a death brings, it also brings financial burdens. Any support you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. We also encourage everyone to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers.
His wife Cindy is so grateful for all of your prayers over the past few days. Every phone call, text and social media message has truly meant so much to her.
Raul is survived by his wife Cindy, his daughter Olivia, his grand-daughter Kayla, his parents, his sister, his nephews and his extended family.
He will be missed dearly by many.
