For Our Fighter, Maria Julia: Help Us Honor Her Legacy

My name is Michelle Ruiz, I am the granddaughter of Maria Julia Martinez. I’m writing and putting this fundraiser together on behalf of the Martinez family.

At just 62 years old, she has lived a life full of love, laughter, and immeasurable strength. A woman of warmth and light, she was always the happiest when surrounded by her family and friends; especially her grandchildren, who were truly the joy of her life.

If you knew my grandmother, you’d know her as the type of woman who sang to her plants in her garden, who always found reasons to smile despite her lifelong battle with multiple illnesses. She has endured and overcome so much; surviving rectal cancer, meningitis, multiple strokes, and pneumonia. Her strength and resilience have been nothing short of inspiring.

Over the past six months alone, my grandmother has been hospitalized five times. Despite her fierce will to keep going, her health began rapidly declining. Unfortunately, my grandmother took her last breaths and peacefully passed away on the 21st. Our hearts are heavy, but we're grateful for the time we had with her. As we prepare to say our final goodbyes, we are reaching out to our extended family, friends, and community to help us ease the financial burden that comes funeral expenses.

We want to honor my grandmothers life with a celebration filled with love. All donations will go directly toward covering funeral arrangements and memorial expenses.

Mi nombre es Michelle Ruiz, soy la nieta de María Julia Martínez. Estoy escribiendo y organizando esta colecta en nombre de la familia Martínez.

Con solo 62 años, ha vivido una vida llena de amor, alegría y una fuerza increíble. Era una mujer llena de luz, siempre feliz cuando estaba rodeada de su familia y sus seres queridos — especialmente de sus nietos, que eran la alegría de su vida.

Si conociste a mi abuela, sabes que era de esas personas que le cantaban a sus plantas, que siempre encontraba motivos para sonreír, aunque la vida le pusiera mil pruebas. A lo largo de los años, enfrentó y venció tantas cosas: cáncer rectal, meningitis, varios derrames cerebrales, neumonía… su fortaleza ha sido un ejemplo para todos.

En los últimos seis meses, mi abuela fue hospitalizada cinco veces. A pesar de su fuerte voluntad de seguir adelante, su salud comenzó a deteriorarse rápidamente. Lamentablemente, mi abuela dio sus últimos respiros y falleció en paz el día 21. Nuestros corazones están llenos de tristeza, pero estamos agradecidos por el tiempo que compartimos con ella.

Mientras nos preparamos para darle nuestro último adiós, estamos recurriendo a nuestra familia extendida, amigos y comunidad para que nos ayuden a aliviar la carga financiera que implican los gastos del funeral.

Queremos despedirla con el amor y el respeto que ella merece. Toda ayuda, por pequeña que sea, será una bendición para nosotros. Y más que nada, su apoyo nos da el espacio para estar unidos como familia en este momento tan doloroso.
