For our darling son kevin

Kevin was a very happy, loving 27 year old man. He started to suffer with epilepsy around the age of 17. As a result of this it meant that unfortunately he couldn’t learn to drive which was one of his biggest dreams, it also stopped him from holding down a job. Missing out on these very mundane tasks which we all take for granted meant that his self-esteem plummeted over the years. His social life declined as he wouldn't know when or where the seizures would occur. One thing that he did look forward to was watching his beloved Liverpool FC and watched every game they played.

In recent months Kevin had gained some of his self confidence and belief back, he was trying to get out more and see family as much as possible, with a recent visit to the park with one of his sisters and family. It was said by all that on this day he was just like a big kid himself taking his nieces and nephew on a slide and enjoying the park. He had also started to take pride in his appearance once again and was extremely proud of his long hair (Which reminded some of his family of Patrick Swayze).

On the morning of Wednesday the 18th of September Kevin had a seizure at home. His dad found him unresponsive on the bathroom floor, once he forced his way in and had called for help he started to perform CPR. When emergency services arrived Kevin wasn’t breathing and his heart had stopped. Paramedics preformed CPR and worked on Kevin trying to restart his heart for around 30 minutes. Finally they found a pulse and rushed him to a&e at the nearest hospital.

On arrival at hospital doctors realised that Kevin was really poorly and transferred him straight to intensive care. While in intensive care he was placed into a medically induced coma and put onto a ventilator to help him breathe. After a few hours there were signs of hope for the whole family when Kevin did start to breathe almost unaided by the ventilator. Unfortunately this was the only and very short positive sign as around midnight that same day he stopped breathing and once again was fully supported by the ventilator.

After a very long sleepless night for the whole family on the Thursday morning he was removed from his medically induced coma to see if any response and conciousness would occur. At this point the consultant did say they thought at best that Kevin was brain dead and would only ever be in a vegetative state. A brain stem test would be required to confirm if Kevin was still alive, this was not possible that same day due to his kidneys shutting down and not processing the sedative out of his system in the usual amount of time. After another painstaking 24 hours the tests were performed and Kevin was sadly pronounced dead at 15:52 on Friday 20th September.

Kevin committed one last selfless act upon his death. Having known the consequences of his epilepsy could one day be fatal, he had discussed with his father David about his wishes to donate his organs. As Kevin used to say “I have no need for them once I’m gone”. So on Saturday morning he was taken to theatre and his organs were removed, it was confirmed that he would be saving 6 other peoples lives.

Kevin will be missed by all who met him but especially his parents David and Julie, sisters Sarah, Samantha and Sophie, his 4 nephews and 4 nieces, cousins and all other extended family.

At this difficult and unexpected time we would be grateful of any donation that you can, no matter how big or small to help with the financial cost of the funeral. If you can find it in your heart to donate it would be greatly appreciated as Kevin donated his.
