Please join us in supporting Oshen Turman, as she mourns the passing of her mother, Joan. This is an opportunity for our extended family (that means us) to support them during her time of grieving. We may not have had the chance to know Joan, and we help because we are called to do so.
Joan was born in 1945 and was a long-time resident of Oakland, CA. Joan lost her fight with cancer on April 11 of this week.
Joan was a white-bodied woman who broke from tradition by marrying a Black man at the cost of losing connection to family members and friends. Their marriage took place over 35 years ago at Lake Merrit.
The couple adopted Oshen who had been in foster care and adopted at age 3. Joan was a Buddhist and raised her children in Buddhist values and principles.
At this time, Oshen needs the love, emotional and financial support from our collective family. And we are called to answer this need.
Beyond the space to properly grieve their loss, Oshen is faced with multiple large expenses ahead. These range from the (Hazmat) cleaning of Joan's house post-mortem (as she died in her home), to funds for the cremation, urn, and services.
Our goal is to cover these expenses as well as to offer Oshen a period of time to live without worry (as Oshen is unemployed currently during this global pandemic). There will be childcare service needs (as Oshen has a young child and needs to provide care for him as she handles the family business), the cost of everyday living, as well as some well-deserved self-care for Oshen.
