Hi, I’m Dhiksha Mohan (24)
I come from Coimbatore, India. I'm the breadwinner in my family. My father is chronically ill needing full time care from my mother as a homemaker and my younger sister is still in school. I’ve been supporting them while studying through scholarships and part-time work.
In 2024, I won the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship to study MSc in Nature-Inspired Solutions at UCL in London. No matter what problem you're currently solving, it's about learning from nature to solve it. The scholarship covers tuition, travel, and living costs. Since moving to the UK, I’ve networked, made local impact through community work, shared knowledge, and led innovations.
As a fruit of these efforts, I’ve now been offered a fully funded 3.5-year PhD at the University of Bath under Dr Alessandro Leronni to study bioelectricity : how understanding electricity in nature can lead to new energy solutions, sustainable batteries and biomedicine?
The Challenge
Even though my PhD is fully funded, I need to pay for my UK student visa and NHS healthcare fee for 3.5 years, which comes to nearly £3594, and is not covered.
I’ve exhausted all options to fund this step:
- I don’t have enough saved while supporting my family
- I can’t sign official loan documents while abroad
- My parents have no income and cannot act as guarantors or take a personal loan
- I’ve applied to many grants and scholarships in India, but most require the student not to have travelled abroad before
I’m holding on tight to this opportunity, but time is short - my course starts in September, and I must apply for my visa soon.
Why This Journey Matters
Alongside my studies, I've also been running a global online community called 1.618 for nature-inspired innovation. I teach underprivileged children about nature-inspired science and sustainability, and I collaborate with local startups, industries, and students to bridge real-world design challenges with nature’s wisdom. This space is more than just a degree. It’s part of a larger mission to give back, uplift communities, and create a nature-rooted future through science and collaboration.
How You Can Help
If you’re able to support with anything, truly, anything helps, and I would be deeply grateful.
If you can’t donate but are willing to lend the amount, please write to me at [email redacted]. I will repay during my PhD through teaching assistantships.
Thank you for taking the time
