For my transplant medical expenses
Donation protected
My name is Robert. I want to share my story. I am 32 years old. At 15 years old I was diagnosed pkd. Pkd stands for polycystic kidney disease. It is when your kidneys delevop cysts on their kidneys that leads to pain and kidney failure. In 2017, I was hospitalized for a severe kidney stone that was stuck and had to be surgically removed. This caused me to go on dialysis. Dialysis has been difficult. 4 hours a day 4 times a week I am hooked up to a machine to clean the toxins from my blood. I started dialysis in 2019. I was not qualified to receive a transplant due to medical issues. I been fighting hard to get to where I am. When I started dialysis, I was on peritoneal dialysis which is when a tube is surgically placed in your stomach and a machine fills your belly with fluid, then it dwells there for 8 hours, then it drains. That failed building my body with too much overloaded water weight and built up my toxins. I started hemo dialysis 1 year later. I struggled with weight and other health issues. In 2021, I had the gastric sleeve. A year after that, I got good news. I went from 430 pounds to now 230 pounds. I qualified for transplant. I never thought this day would come. I searched and searched for a live donor. The deceased donor wait time for my blood type is over 8 years. My church, my family and my friends around me have been such a support system. I joined the Knights of Columbus, a men's church group. Through them, they helped support my search. I found a donor! However, he was not able to directly donate to me so we decided to do the paired exchange. He would donate to someone else and I would have someone else donate to me. Aug 2023, my donor donated, now it was time for me. They said it would be 4 to 6 months before I got my miracle bean! Oct 2023, phone rings, they found my match! Nov 14 2023 I will get my bean! I ask for prayers and support. My wife is alone the only financial support. With the surgery and new medications, it will be a bit challenging but I know this journey has been worth it. Thank you to all who have been here with me rooting me on!
