Dear Friends and Family,
As I celebrate my 35th birthday, I find myself reflecting on what truly matters. Our democracy is under threat, and the rights and freedoms we cherish feel increasingly fragile. Yet, even in uncertain times, I hold onto hope, justice, and the unwavering belief that a more just world is possible. Many of you receiving this message have witnessed my journey of striving to integrate the values that truly matter to me—justice, compassion, and hope—into both my life and my work. As a social worker, I have seen firsthand the difference that lawyers and legal advocacy can make in people’s lives. My Jewish upbringing has instilled in me a deep commitment to tikkun olam—the idea that we are all responsible for repairing the world. In times of distress and uncertainty, I have always looked for the helpers. And today, I am inviting you to be one of them.
As many of you know, I have dedicated my career to social justice, specifically as a social worker, psychotherapist and advocate for the immigrant community (for more information about what I've been up to lately, click here ). When our immigrant brothers and sisters are under attack, we are all under attack. At the root of this is a ruthless attack on civil liberties, freedom, and humanity.
This birthday, instead of gifts, I am asking you to join me in supporting Democracy Forward —a fierce legal organization tirelessly fighting to defend our civil rights to protect democracy. Democracy Forward uses donations to fund strategic litigation, policy advocacy, and public education efforts to challenge unlawful government actions and advance progressive causes.
Democracy Forward has been at the forefront of challenging actions that threaten our democratic principles. Recently, they filed lawsuits against the Trump administration's efforts to politicize the civil service and to shut down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), actions that have significant implications for both domestic governance and global humanitarian efforts.
To amplify our impact, the first $1,000 raised will be matched. This means your contribution—no matter the amount—will go twice as far in supporting Democracy Forward's critical work.
Even in dark times, we have the power to be the light. Fred Rogers once said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” Today, I ask: Will you be one of those people? Will you stand with me in bringing light to those who need it most?
Your contribution—no matter the amount—will make a difference. It will help uplift those in need, advocate for justice, and carry forward the vision of a world where kindness and action go hand in hand. We are stronger together. El pueblo unido jamas será vencido, or the people united will never be defeated! In honor of hope, justice, and community, I hope you will join me in raising money for Democracy Forward.
With gratitude and determination,
Hannah
