Hello, my name is Domonique Smith-Vann and my 16-year-old daughter and I were recently in a very bad car accident where we were hit by a drunk driver who subsequently left the scene of the accident. My daughter Avery would have began her junior year of high school this year but unfortunately, she now lays in a hospital bed in intensive care fighting for her life.
On August 12, 2022, between 10:30 and 11:00pm, a drunk driver sped through a stop sign and struck our vehicle on Avery’s side of the car, as we were traveling home from a local fast food restaurant. Both she and myself were hurt however, Avery’s injuries were far more extensive and required her to be airlifted to another hospital over an hour away.
Since the accident, Avery has had to undergo numerous surgeries to repair holes in her heart, liver, pancreas, bladder, and diaphragm, a collapsed lung, broken tibia, a shattered pelvis, and a torn left aorta. Currently she has stabilizing bars holding her pelvis together and is on a ventilator that is breathing for her. She will not be able to bear weight on her pelvis for at least three months and shall remain bedridden. Avery has to undergo more surgeries in the near future followed by physical and occupational therapies. Once Avery comes home, she will also need proper accommodations within our home to assist her with mobility and daily living.
I am currently unable to work due to my own injuries as well as having to be by my daughter’s bedside. My family and I would like your financial assistance with paying Avery’s medical bills and also being able to afford necessities such as food, shelter, and traveling expenses as driving back and forth to the hospital is becoming quite expensive.
Avery is a model student, avid athlete of both basketball and volleyball, dependable employee, and a great friend to many. Her smile and personality brightens up even the darkest room. Avery’s athletic career may be over due to this senseless accident that could have been prevented had the driver decided not to operate a car under the influence of intoxicants. If you could find it in your heart to donate to assist us in providing the necessary care for Avery it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking time to read about my baby’s journey. May God continue to bless and keep you.
Update: Avery has improved a great deal. She had another, and hopefully the last, surgery in November and is doing well. She has been approved to return to school part time and is working to get caught up with her studies. Thank you all for your continued prayers, donations, and well wishes. You are truly appreciated. #AveryStrong
