For Maverick

Michelle “Maverick” Mattingly is no ordinary woman. While some of you may know her from the amazing work she does, or the soccer mom who tries to attend every game, or the adrenaline junky who is the first to volunteer for any crazy activity, she is also a woman who doesn’t stop fighting. Sixteen months ago, Maverick was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, her third time battling this terrible disease. Maverick has shown nothing but strength, endurance, and bravery through her treatments. Even though she has been extremely sick, she has done her best to continue with the tasks of everyday life and live as normal a life as possible. While doing this, she is also a single mom raising four kids: Maya ( 17), Kate (15), Jake (13), and Gavin (12). Throughout the chaos of cancer, Maverick puts her duties as a mom first and has tried to make their lives as normal as possible. Maverick did not let cancer get in the way of what was most important to her: her children and family.

Our beloved Michelle passed on Monday, March 9th. She was surrounded by family and friends, and so much love. She departed this world with a smile on her face. Michelle had so much love in her heart for her family, friends, and community. She has meant so much to us all. I know she taught me so much during the course of our friendship. We had a lot of amazing laughs, challenging moments that we held each other through, and beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.
