In Memory of Matthew Kang- Born the morning of November 29, 2019, he died 5 hours later in the arms of his loving parents, Seung & Becky Kang.
UCI Medical Center Labor & Delivery was where Matthew Kang spent the majority of his abbreviated life. In utero, Matthew was diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, commonly known as brittle bone disease. Suffering from the most severe form of the disease, Matthew was born with extremely fragile bones and lung development complications. Inheriting his parents’ resiliency, Matthew fought for life from the moment of his birth, until he breathed his last- and on an incomparably Black Friday when Americans were shattering historic single day retail consumption figures, the Kangs paid the ultimate price.
The Kangs now face extreme hardships no parent should ever be burdened with. They will retrieve Matthew’s Birth and Death Certificates on the same day. They will arrange the painful details of putting their infant son to rest. They will face the burdensome thoughts of financial cost when their sole focus should be mourning for Matthew. They are discovering, bill after bill, how insufficiently their health insurance covers the litany of tests, procedures, and specialist visits. They are discovering that the costs of infant burials are complex and significant. Moreover, in the most unfortunate timing, Becky may no longer have a job to return to.
Seung has labored in 3 jobs in an attempt to address ascending costs. Despite the uncertain financial situation, he will need to quit one of his jobs, and temporarily scale back on the others in order to focus on the immediate needs at home. Becky endured a C-Section delivery due to Matthew’s condition, and yet her physical recovery will be the simplest challenge to endure, as emotional and psychological recovery has no timetable, nor is there a miracle drug to ease the heartache of losing a child. They need sufficient time to mourn, rest, reflect, and heal from this loss without the heavy burden of financial hardship.
Those who know the Kangs can attest their lives are quintessentially sacrificial, devoted to ministering to the needs of others. Not once have they asked for anything in return. And now, in a time of dire need, we can choose to help support a family who has given and lost unspeakable amounts. Accordingly, the friends of Seung & Becky firstly request that you would offer up earnest prayers on their behalf.
