For Lisa — Because We Love Her

Our friend Dr. Lisa Munson was teaching at Florida State University on April 17 when a shooter opened fire on campus. Her classroom—ground floor, Bellamy Building—was right by the glass doors students were running through to escape. Dozens of students ended up barricaded in her room. She held their hands, whispered to them in the dark, calmed the panic, and kept everyone quiet and low while chaos exploded on the other side of the door.

Lisa laid on the ground in terror for an hour - texting her family "I love you," checking on her kids. That hour that will last much much longer in Lisa and her kids' lives than just those sixty minutes.

Lisa is the kind of person who would never ask for anything, so I’m doing this instead. Lisa and her kids have already carried so much with incredible grace — Ellie's hard fought health journey for one —and now this.

And the truth is, most of us feel helpless. You want to do something, but a Facebook comment or a text doesn’t feel like enough. You want to give her space, but you also want her to know she’s not alone.

So here’s what we’re doing: a fund, for whatever she wants. Therapy. Wine. A plane ticket to Italy. Getting the hell out of the country for a bit. Anything that gives her peace or pleasure or even just a pause.
