Dr. Darryl Jones raising funds against expenses to lay to rest a cousin beloved to him and family--LESLIE BARLOW.
Leslie Barlow was an amazing comedienne, singer and actress. From a very young age, her Mom, Gwen Byrd, immersed her in dance lessons, acting classes and more to fuel that natural talent she was born with. Leslie’s Dad, Duke Barlow, whom she looked up to, was a gifted singer reminiscent of Nat King Cole. He would serenade the family during the holidays with Nat’s “The Christmas Song.” Leslie worked hard at her career making it to Broadway as a lead performer in the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of the Fats Waller Musical Revue “Ain’t Misbehavin’” (1978-1982). She also toured with the national and world companies of “Ain’t.’” Leslie, a featured performer in the Off-Broadway production of “Beehive,” also joined the company that toured Australia, where she put down roots and lived for many years and fronted her own band. She continued her acting career and was a performer in the 1991 Australian production of the rock musical “Hair.” Leslie Barlow returned to the United States in 1997, where she produced her one-woman show of songs, dance and comedic storytelling, mainly about her family. She also taught workshops for students preparing to enter into professional entertainment. Leslie Barlow passed away in Chesapeake, Virginia on August 25, 2020, she was predeceased by her mother, Gwendolyn Byrd, on February 1, 2020. Rest in Peace, Angels.
