There are no words big enough to explain the heartbreak our family is living through right now.
On Thursday 22nd January, my bright, funny, and endlessly adventurous niece Isla suffered a stroke at pre-school at just four years old. She suddenly lost the ability to speak and stand, and thanks to the quick actions of her incredible teachers, an ambulance was called immediately. Isla was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, where she has remained ever since.
The stroke has significantly affected the right side of her body, but in true Isla fashion, she is already showing her strength. She’s taken a couple of wobbly steps, she’s speaking again (even if it’s sometimes hard to understand), and she’s still singing whenever she can. Her spark is still there but the road ahead will be long, uncertain, and full of challenges.
What makes this even more devastating is that just days before Isla became ill, her mum Kitty had already been admitted to hospital herself. She was still in hospital and unwell when Isla was rushed in, and she remains unwell while doctors carry out ongoing investigations. It’s an unimaginable amount for one family to face at the same time.
While trying to be by Isla’s bedside, there is also her baby sister Raya, just one year old, who needs care, comfort, and stability. Isla’s older sister Ava is also missing her terribly.
Dan is currently unable to work and, as the time approaches for him to return, he will only be able to do so on a much more restricted basis. With ongoing hospital commitments, caring for Raya, and supporting Kitty and Isla, his capacity to work remains limited. As a result, the family’s income is significantly reduced, and financial pressure is increasing at a critical time.
Strokes in children are rare, and support for families in this situation is extremely limited. The costs add up quickly travel to and from hospital, food, childcare for Raya, specialist equipment, accessible clothing, and ongoing therapy that Isla will need during her recovery. Once the cause of her stroke is confirmed, her treatment and rehabilitation journey is likely to be long.
This fundraiser is to give Isla’s family breathing space to ease the financial strain so they can focus on what truly matters: Isla’s recovery, Kitty’s health, and keeping life as stable as possible for Raya and Ava.
If you’re able to donate, share, or support in any way, it truly means the world to our family. Thank you for helping them feel less alone during the most frightening time of their lives.
