For Gail: Aplastic Anemia

Hello everyone,

On the night of Tuesday the 7th of November my mom, Gail Morgan, went to the doctor complaining of a rapid heartbeat and excessive fatigue. The Doctor recommended that she immediately go to the emergency room at Oaklawn Hospital. Once their vitals were fine but she was dangerously low on white blood cells, Hemoglobin, and platelets. They quickly transferred her to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital where she would be given transfusions of blood and platelets. Te next day she underwent a bone marrow biopsy and other numerous tests. This came with a 3 and half day stay with multiple transfusions in the hospital while waiting for tests. She was released temporarily with a diagnosis of severe aplastic anemia (complete bone marrow failure).

She visited the hematology/oncology department at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo and met with Doctor Usman on Thursday the 16th. They discussed treatment options and referred you to U of M Hospital for more specialized care. Friday the 17th she received 2 more blood transfusions and platelets. this took over 8 hours to complete in the ER at Bronson Battle Creek.

On Monday November 20th we met with Dr. Bixby at U of M and had more tests and a second bone marrow biopsy. He recommended that she was admitted to the university hospital the next day. She has needed multiple transfusions of blood and platelets since arriving. The course of treatment that was decided upon was ATGAM Treatment. This suppresses your immune system and hopefully allow the bone marrow to regenerate and begin normal cell creation.
This is a process that will take up to 3 months to see results. During that time she will be required to attend 3 blood test a week back at the University of Michigan to monitor progress and receive transfusions if needed. She will also require numerous medications, many for the rest of her life. For the foreseeable future she will be unable to work due to her compromised immune system.

We are asking for donations to help cover the extreme medical costs that come with battling this rare condition as well as transportation and other costs associated with being unable to work during this very difficult time. Your help mean the world to all of us and thank you for any support that you can offer!
