My name is Edel and I have created this GoFundMe fundraiser on behalf of my sister-in-law, Christina, with her full knowledge, permission and consent.
Christina has asked me to manage the funds raised through this fundraiser on her behalf. I will be responsible for receiving and managing the funds and using them specifically to purchase her prescribed treatment.
Christina has been prescribed a treatment for her brain tumor by a medical team in Germany. The cost of the treatment is £22,871.58 for each three-month course.
With Christina’s permission, I will use the funds raised to purchase this treatment on her behalf from Germany. The funds will therefore be used specifically towards obtaining Christina’s treatment and will not be used for any unrelated purpose.
The initial fundraising target is to cover the first three-month course of treatment. If Christina requires further treatment, each subsequent three-month course is expected to cost £22,871.58 Any funds raised above the initial target will be used towards purchasing further courses of the same treatment for Christina.
Christina has given me permission to manage the funds for her and to use them on her behalf for this purpose.
Please read her story:
At just 38 years old, Christina should be enjoying life with her family, watching her three children grow up and looking forward to all the ordinary moments that make life special.
Instead, life took a devastating and unexpected turn at the beginning of the year.
In February, Christina was diagnosed with a rare and highly aggressive Grade IV brain tumour.
Christina is a devoted mum to three children, Kylagh, Cathaoir and Daithi.
Kylagh is 16 and has chosen to pursue her A Levels. Cathaoir will start his first year at the same school as his big sister St Ciaran's College in Ballygawley, and Daithi is about to begin P6 in St. Macartan's Primary School, Clogher.
These should be carefree years filled with excitement, plans and family memories.
Instead, Christina and her children are having to face a reality that no family should have to.
Christina wants more time. More time with her children. More time to watch them grow. More time to simply be their mum.
And that is why we are asking for your help.
Many people will know Christina as their local hairdresser from Hair @ Main Street, Clogher.
Christina is someone who has always put others before herself.
She loves spending time with family and friends. People would often see her at St. Patrick's Park cheering on Clogher. She's always been a reliable GAA volunteer and is currently a member of their committee; reviving Irish culture which she thrives in!
She also has been known to turn more than competitive at the local quiz night!
A woman of many talents, Christina is our go-to baker, making the cakes and desserts that have become part of so many family occasions.
Most importantly, she loves bringing people together and making people happy.
She has always been the one giving to others and would never be the person to ask for help herself. So now, her family are asking for it on her behalf.
Christina's Story
At the beginning of January, Christina attended A&E suffering from severe headaches and numbness in her cheek and upper lip. Over Christmas, she had been treated for what was believed to be a sinus infection, never imagining that something far more serious was happening.
While standing alone in the A&E corridor, Christina was told that her brain scan had revealed an unusual mass.
In that moment, her world changed forever.
She was transferred from South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where she underwent high-risk surgery to obtain a biopsy. A shunt was also inserted to drain the fluid caused by the tumour.
Because of the location of the tumour, it could not be surgically removed. Doctors explained that it sits within what they described as the brain's "control room", making surgery potentially fatal.
On 10th February, Christina received the devastating biopsy results.
The tumor is known as Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG) with the H3K27M mutation which is a Grade IV, very rare and aggressive form of brain cancer.
Despite everything, Christina has faced every challenge with incredible courage, strength and determination.
In March, she began six weeks of intensive treatment, attending radiotherapy everyday alongside chemotherapy.
The only treatment available to Christina through the NHS in Northern Ireland was the current standard of care for her condition, which she has now completed.
We were told that there is nothing further the NHS can offer Christina in terms of treatment.
So; we began researching every possible avenue.
Germany
We spoke to people who have suffered through the same heartache, corresponded with UK charities, researched medical journals and followed the latest developments in alternative treatments for this tumour.
That search led us to the German Sourced ONC201 drug Imiprodin, a targeted treatment available through the Centre for Advanced Medicine in Frankfurt, Germany, for patients with the H3K27M mutation.
The Treatment
German Sourced ONC201(IMIPRIDON) is a targeted drug that has shown promise in patients with diffuse midline glioma carrying the H3K27M mutation.
Research suggests that the drug targets specific pathways involved in these tumour cells, helping to disrupt the processes that allow the tumour to survive, grow and divide.
It is not a cure.
We know that.
Unfortunately, this treatment is not available through the NHS and must be accessed privately in Germany.
The cost of this treatment is far beyond what our family can afford alone.
That is why we are asking for your help.
We have initially been advised to secure the first three months of German Sourced ONC201(IMIPRIDON) for Christina. This is administered in tablet form and will be exported to her from Germany.
After those three months, her treatment will be reviewed by her specialist team. If they believe the treatment is beneficial, we hope to continue for as long as it remains a viable option for her.
How You Can Help
If you are able to donate, no matter how small, you will be helping Christina access treatment that would otherwise be beyond our family's reach.
Every donation brings us one step closer to giving Christina this opportunity.
If you cannot donate, please share Christina's story. Sharing this page could reach someone who can help, and every share gives us another chance to reach our fundraising goal.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for taking the time to read Christina's story.
Thank you for caring.
Thank you for sharing.
