For Basil Mayeux, With love

This is the official Basil Mayeux GoFundme page created by his family. All funds raised will be controlled By his son Theron & wife Kaylee Mayeux.
My name is Broderick Mayeux Jr, the author of the passage and eldest grandson of Basil. Our family has been devastated from the sudden passing of our beloved father/grandfather who was discovered in his studio apartment on his birthday, departed from this life from what was ruled as natural causes. Basil was born and raised in Cajun Country Louisiana. Grandpa was a Vietnam Veteran who possessed a deep passion for culinary arts. He lived a life of grit, resilience, and an unconditional love for his 2 children, grandchildren, and family to friends beyond. Seeing many parts of the world through serving in the U.S. armed forces, to cooking in premier establishments in New Orleans, LA Basil gained a unique perspective to be able to pass on to his boys and speak across multiple generations. Shortly after surviving Hurricane Katrina (2005) he was brought up to Portland, Oregon through the help of his son Theron and the many people in his culinary network. Since that point he'd create bonds and valuable impressions on many of my uncle's culinary colleagues and my own friends of recent years in Oregon.
Even with these warm memories of Basil's legacy it was not secured with a life insurance policy. He was interviewd by a policy firm who deemed him not eligible for life insurance because of his medical history right before Covid-19 took off and accessibility in that area started to slow down. I witnessed my uncle and his wife strive to the very end in utilizing resources independently and via Veterans Affairs to make their father's golden years easy and joyous. Several of us prepared to come together and have a beautiful summer birthday party for grandpa's 81st, but that exact scenario was not in his destiny. With my uncle Theron, his wife Kaylee, and myself being the only appropriate family in this region to ensure he is delivered the right way, it is a very trialing time to be directly responsible in putting together a final goodbye.
For these memorial expenses we call on our friends and family to help us in this sudden time of need. Many of us knew Basil was strong-minded and carried a bunch of pride. He would always say to me, "I'm a Lone-Wolf!" or "If you see me in a fight with a bear, help the bear!" Grandpa didn't want to reveal any vulnerability to us but in this moment of separation we feel the most hurt and vulnerable. All thoughts, prayers, and kind gestures are deeply appreciated.
