If you’ve ever met Ash and Mary, you know their hearts reflect Christ’s love. They’ve spent their lives serving others, quietly giving, donating charitably, providing help without hesitation, and both being a shining light to so many. They have never asked for anything in return. They are now in their greatest time of need, and we have the opportunity to try to return some grace which they’ve given so freely.
In a single, senseless moment, everything changed when Ash suffered an unprovoked, near deadly assault at his residence causing him to become a paraplegic. Ash was required to undergo immediate emergency spinal surgery and now suffers from a catastrophic spinal injury, facing a future no one could have imagined. The road ahead will be relentless, with a long hospital stay, surgeries, rehabilitation, pain, and the fight to adapt to a new life, forever changed.
Ash and Mary humbly tried to decline any financial help, but the reality is that while Ash faces a long and difficult recovery, he also carries the heavy burden of losing his only source of income as a self-employed worker. We as their friends, family and community could not remain silent or idle.
This fundraiser will give Mary the ability to stand by his side while balancing her job, ensuring they can focus on his recovery without the constant weight of financial strain. They need our help and support now more than ever, as the road ahead will be long, costly, and emotionally heavy.
Ash and Mary will need aid and support with many things, including:
- a prolonged hospital stay, with years of rehabilitation to rebuild strength and relearn even the simplest tasks
- equipment to help Ash live and improve his quality of life with as much independence as possible
- relocating to a wheelchair accessible home, as their current residence cannot be modified
- modifications to their new home suitable for a person living with paralysis
- a specially modified vehicle for medical appointments
- extra aid from support workers to help at home
- ongoing medical appointments, equipment, treatments, medications and supplies that will be part of daily life
- Specialised bed/hoist to aid mobility and transfers
They’ve always been the first to give and the last to ask for help. It is not in either of their nature to ask for help but this is our chance to carry them through the hardest life changing event. This uphill battle is bigger than any one person, and it is time for us to stand by them the way they have supported many others.
Your generosity, either through a donation, sharing this fundraiser, or raising a prayer, will ease the weight of their financial strain, provide the practical support they need, and remind them they are not on this journey alone.
Let’s rally around Ash and Mary with the same selfless love they’ve shown to so many. Together, we can help ease their burden, give them space to focus on rehabilitation, and surround them with the love and support that they deserve.
