For Alina's Mama

Hello,

My name is Alina. This is a photo of my mother and me. She has been living in an assisted care facility in Mexico since May 2018, and on January 3rd, 2023 I received a call from the facility that she had fallen and was complaining of pain in her hip. X-rays proved that she had a fracture. I am married and living with my husband in Orlando, FL so I had to fly out the following day. She thankfully underwent surgery on the 6th and was released on the 9th, though since then several complications have surfaced.

Arriving, I discovered that whatever finances she had saved up could not be accessed due to the debit cards having expired the month before and her address not being updated in the accounts so that new ones could be delivered. Banks in Mexico are very strict and nobody was able to help me recover the cards, not even with the power of attorney that I have, as they need to be very specific. When I had to return to Florida, I awaited the results of her follow-up appointment but found the update off-putting. With a second opinion from a private, specialized doctor, it turned out that the wound had not healed and there was the possibility of infection. She was admitted into a private hospital that we are not able to afford and we must try to move her back to where she is covered.

Besides a cousin that has been able to try and help me with smaller tasks where my mother is located, we are alone in our efforts and the costs have been overwhelming. I have been trying to fly to her when I can, but I have to help mostly from afar to continue to work to afford most of anything. On top of that, recently she had been showing signs of delirium and dementia. I worry for her, and I am trying to ensure that she is given 24/7 care while funding the recovery process and what has been accumulated already. Everything to the smallest amount matters.
