Supporting Walter McCarthy & Family

Donation protected
On Tuesday March 12th, Walter went to the emergency room in California after having chills and nausea.  He had been experiencing these symptoms on and off for a few weeks.  Despite having been to the Emergency Department and a few doctors appointments, there was no conclusion as to what was causing this.

He was about to be discharged again, when he went into cardiac arrest and needed to be resuscitated, which was discovered when one of his children couldn’t get ahold of him and was informed by hospital staff.  The hospital staff told Cheryl, Amy and Ryan to come out to California on the next flight, and they arrived to meet Sean by 10am the next morning.

It is still unclear exactly what caused this catastrophic medical event, but 7 doctors and a team of nurses and medical staff are working to support Walter’s healing.  His condition is very guarded, and the doctor’s have let us know that they are taking things hour to hour.

Within 24 hours of arriving at the hospital, the McCarthy’s were informed that they needed to prepared for palliative care measures to be taken.  They spent time sitting around Walter’s bedside experiencing the heaviness or trying to come to terms with what it would be like to lose him, while other family around the country were asked to pray and hope for a “Hail Mary” pass.  Within hours, the only other man to rival Tom Brady as Boston’s Best Comeback had turned a corner and hope was reinvigorated for his recovery.

As many know, Walter has coped with many illnesses for his whole life, starting at the age of 10, when he was diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes.  Since then he has successfully contended with end stage renal failure and subsequent kidney and pancreas transplant, leg amputation, and more.  He has had over 17 surgeries, many of which it was unclear if he would survive.

He has been chronically ill for over 16 years, and he and his family recognize the gift it has been to have medical professionals and science extend his life.  Walter too has a will to live-his love for his family knows no bounds, he is social, and lives to make others laugh.  Despite now coping with septic shock, and heart, kidney, liver and lung failure he has shown superhuman strength and his doctors think we can’t give up on him now.  Walter continues to beat the odds, and his family is inspired, grateful and in awe.

His family has been told they should plan to stay in California for an extended period of time, which impacts their housing, wages and are incurring additional costs.  Despite having medical challenges like this before, his family has always been able to find a way to work things out.  They continue to be grateful for all the family, friends, community members and church family (from Southwick Community Episcopal Church) for their never ending support.   Unfortunately, financial support for them is needed this time around, due to the serious and complex nature of Walter’s condition.
