Help Start Our Vineyard!

We are Leonard and Beth Law, and our dream to plant a vineyard and build a winery was born during a random stop in the Finger Lakes region of New York 20 years ago. Leonard’s career in the Army took us all over the country and the world. But in 2002, ignorant and ambitious, we purchased 40 acres of land near Valley, Wash. Leonard retired from active duty in 2016, and now it’s time for us to put the dream to the test. We want to plant our vines in May 2018, so everything we need must be ready by early April.

The view from our vineyard site is of Fool’s Prairie, a section of the Colville River Valley named after a legendary stubborn warrior. The name fits perfectly this pioneering vineyard we are planting. Our first test vines, planted eight years ago, consistently produce beautiful clusters of grapes, and our lab testing last fall proved that it’s perfect for making champagne-style sparkling wine!

Stevens County in northeastern Washington was traditionally a mining and logging economy, which has been hard-hit in recent times. We want to bring a new crop to the area and help the local economy. We hope you will help us get started. Your donation will help establish Fool’s Prairie Vineyard, and is certain to be a positive contribution to our rural community!

Since 2002, we have improved the vineyard site by putting up fencing, running power to the property and drilling wells. When Leonard left the Army, he enrolled in the Enology and Viticulture program at Walla Walla Community College and he graduates in June. His passion is growing grapes and he believes that the wine should reflect what happens in the vineyard.

Last summer, we spent weeks getting the soil ready for the vineyard, and we are now ready to plant our first 1-1/4 acre! This money will be used to buy vineyard equipment, 1,000 grapevines, over 600 steel posts, 24,000 feet of trellis wire, anchoring systems, and the irrigation system. It took us a while to swallow our pride and turn to crowd sourcing, but friends and family continued to encourage us and here we are. Please consider making a donation to Fool’s Prairie Vineyard.  Since our vineyard will have 20 rows to start off, the top 20 donors will get a row named after them!

We promise to be good stewards of your money, the land, and the beautiful wines we will make. We look forward to sharing them with you and we appreciate any contribution, big or small!!!
