Food for Kibera-families during COVID-lockdown

Donation protected
We ask for your donation the coming 7 days (up to 20 April), so that Amani Kibera Foundation, can provide food for 20 families, who need it to survive the current corona crisis.

Some African countries, like Kenya, are in lock-down (or shutdown) because of the COVID-19 virus. This means that people can’t go out for work. No work means no income. No income means no food.

In the news, first stories appear about how hunger might be an even greater danger in African cities, than the virus itself. For just €36 (or KES 4,000), a family of 5 can buy food for another month!

The situation in African cities in lockdown or shutdown is completely different from those living in Europe. Kenya doesn’t have any compensation regulations for those who lost their jobs or income. Living in Kibera – the largest slum of Nairobi (and one of the largest of Africa) – means: fetching water from the communal tab, using communal toilets and sharing a small home with many family members.

So, what is needed now for those in shutdown is food! You can be already of great help by doing a small donation!

EXTRA INFORMATION
Amani Kibera Foundation is based in Kibera since 2007 and provides young people and their families with opportunities in nonformal education in sports, arts and fashion. Currently, they do hand-washing campaigns and the fashion school shifted to make medical face masks for the community health volunteers. Last week they did their 1st food donation, focusing on sick, old and disabled.
The foundation was founded after 2007 election-violence. Amani Kibera means ‘Peace in Kibera’.
The estimated numbers of people living in Kibera, vary from 500,000 to 2 million.

PS:
If this crowdfunding turns out to be successful, we wish to elaborate the action to other African countries in lockdown.
Working in Africa / with African colleagues for over 14 years, I have several colleagues across the continent whom I trust very much, who do great work and have loads of expertise.
Comparing it to donating through a Dutch ngo – no doubt, some of them doing great work too – I believe, this is faster, (at least) equally good and it saves overhead costs (imagine, my salary is 10 times higher than the average Nairobi salary).
