Essential Groceries for Families in Medellín
Donation protected
We've created this page to raise money for food for families in Medellín who are struggling to put food on the table during the quarantine period. Everyone has been affected by the coronavirus emergency, but in Colombia where a majority of the population works informally and struggles for basic necessities at the best of times, the crisis is not just a medical one but also one of basic subsistence. There is a strict mandatory quarantine here: only one member of each household is allowed out to buy food or medicine 1-2 days per week. As a result, families with no savings and no options to work during the quarantine are going hungry. Sadly, news emerged last week from neighbourhoods nearby to where we live of many households hanging red rags from their windows - a plea for help by those who do not have food or basic hygiene products and have not received help from the government. Since then, the same red rags have appeared in other deprived neighbourhoods across Medellín and other cities in Colombia.
Our plan is to raise as much money as we can to buy and deliver food and basic necessities locally, to those who are most in need. We are currently in touch with local community leaders and foundations who are helping us identify the best way of doing this, and the best way to target the funds. We know these are difficult times for everyone, so if you can't donate then just sharing this page would be a great help. But for those who are interested in donating, even a small donation will go far - a basic weekly family shop costs around £25. 100% of the money raised will be spent on essentials, as we will cover all organisational and/or administrative costs - we will obviously also be donating ourselves. We will keep you all updated with information and photos as to how the money is being spent.
Thanks so much for your help, it is hugely appreciated.
